Course Content

The subject of this master course is Maritime Archeology and is given in collaboration with guestlecturer Dr. Marnix Pieters from the Agentschap Onroerend Erfgoed.

Short content course:
1. introduction: definitions, concepts and historiography
2. Research techniques
3. legisation, international and national
4. The most imortant shipwrecks international
5. Maritime sites international
6. Shipwrecks and maritime sites in Belgium
7.Geology, archaeology and heritage in the Belgian part of the North Sea 

In addition independent oral presentatation and essay

The lectures can include both 'face to face lessons' as distance lectures (i.e. lectures via recordings or via synchronous online contact moments) in the case of a new covid'19 outbreak.

General competencies

The student can identify the most important trends within the research field of Maritime Archaeology.

The student can thoroughly explain crucial case studies and their importance for the dynamics of the research field.

The student can analyze and explain formation processes in Maritime Archaeology.

The student can explain the importance of maritime connections for the material culture of seafaring and maritime settlements.

The student can elucidate (debates in) heritage care for maritime heritage.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: The other grades are given on the oral examination, where the essays are discussed, as well as the literature discussed in the lectures.

Within the SELF Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Presentatie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Essays with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

    Note: Each essay is graded. The best of the two essays will count for 60% of the end result.

Not delivering the essay and/or not participating to the presentation leads to Absent as general examination result.

The assement of the competentces for this course happens according a gradual score model between very bad and very good, on a scale of 1 to 20.

In the case of covid'19 in 20-21 the possibility exists to re-organise the face-to-face exam as digital oral assesment
