Inhoud

The course consists of two parts. The first part constitutes an internship in a private company or in a government or research institution, covering a period of about 40 working days.

The second part constitutes the preparation of an extensive written report and the presentation of this report in a seminar. The report should contain the framework and particular aims of the internship, the planning of the internship, the management of all activities deployed before, during and after the internship as well as the results of the performed tasks in the host company or institution.

Prerequisite

Students need to have a thorough basic knowledge in the field of Geography or closely related research disciplines relevant for the theme of the internship. Students should be able - on an individual basis - to search for relevant scientific information on a specific topic, to analyze this information and to present this in a report.

General Competences

The aim of this course is to acquire relevant applied spatial competences in a company or in a government or research institution through an internship. Students need to report their experiences verbally as well as in writing. Additional objectives are to exercise social skills, to develop attitudes such as flexibility, coping with stress, the ability to organize, to be critical as well as to be geared towards results.

After successful completion of this course the student should:

- Have strengthened his/her domain specific and organisational skills in a professional context, and have demonstrated the ability to identify and remediate gaps in one’s background and knowledge through focused and efficient information gathering and self-study;

- Have acquired first-hand experience in the way professionals take up roles and responsibilities in a business, policy or research oriented environment, and be able to clearly reflect and communicate on this experience in both written and oral form;

- Have demonstrated commitment with respect to entrusted tasks and assignments and take up responsibility towards superiors and co-workers for the tasks performed and the output generated;

- Have developed an initial professional identity, enabling an evaluation of one’s proper strengths and weaknesses that should facilitate making deliberate choices at the start of one’s career, fostering one’s professional and personal development.

Examination method

Written report (40%), oral presentation (20%), continuous evaluation (40%)

The final report on the performed internship will be evaluated (40%), as well as the oral presentation of the report during the final seminar (20%). An important part of the final mark will also be based on the continuous evaluation of the internship process by internship supervisors from both the host institution and from the university (evaluation of domain specific skills and performance and of generic, non-domain specific skills, including independency, creativity, flexibility, punctuality, target setting, output orientation, communication with co-workers and project partners) (40%).
