Course Content

In this course our goal is to (1) deepen the scientific basis for understanding general human disease mechanisms, (2) understand the mechanisms involved in the genesis and evolution of diseases, (3) gain knowledge and understanding of the diversity of micro-organisms, their pathogenicity and the defense mechanisms of the human being, (4)  get an idea of the epidemiology, symptoms, diagnostic and therapeutic approach of diseases, and (5)  stimulate  lifelong learning  by using scientific manuscripts dealing with current health and disease problems.

Part 1: General pathophysiology (as arteriosclerosis); Crosstalk between organs in diseased states; Introduction to infectious diseases:

Part 2: Microbiology and Parasitology: diversity and pathogenicity of micro-organisms; host-parasite relationship; resistance against infectious diseases; pharmacological treatment options and vaccinations.

Part 3: The Organ systems (The cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the kidney and its collecting system, the Liver and Gastrointestinal system, the endocrine system, the hematopoietic and lymphoid systems, central and peripheral nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, the skin, the male and female genital system).

Part 4: review of "hot topics" in the literature. This part of the course responds to the actuality and is codetermined by the importance of the subject and the complementarity with what has already been discussed in the course. Some indicative examples: The Zika virus; new developments and treatments in ADPKD or the atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 90% of the final mark.
LEC Presentation determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen prof. Van der Niepen with a relative weight of 90 which comprises 90% of the final mark.

    Note: Bespreking van een recent artikel i.v.m pathofysiologie van een bepaalde aandoening. Groepswerk met 2 à 3 studenten. Voorstelling met pwp-presentatie gedurende 10 à 15 minuten met discussie

Additional info regarding evaluation

Discussion of a recent article on the pathophysiology of a specific condition:

o Group work with 2-3 students

The questions are mainly focused on the understanding of the pathophysiology of a particular disease or organ dysfunction, knowledge about the micro-organisms, laboratory diagnostics and treatment options.
