Course Content

The Applied Linguistics Research Project is a core component of the programme aimed at developing advanced research skills. It results in an academically based final project. This final project can take different formats: e.g. a scholarly or vulgarising article, a translation with critical commentary, academic or creative posters or a podcast. The formats available for this final project will be determined by the lecturers at the beginning of the academic year.

Each project starts from a specific research question that requires a methodical and scientific approach, with a clear focus on academic integrity. Students are paired with a lecturer team at the beginning of the academic year, which not only guides and evaluates, but also acts as a sounding board throughout.

Guidelines and additional supporting resources for the project are communicated via the CANVAS learning platform. The project concludes with an oral presentation and defence of the final project.

Additional info

During fixed consultation moments between students and lecturers, students are given assignments aimed at preparing their final project, which form part of their final project portfolio. These assignments are discussed in group. Active participation and involvement during these meetings are mandatory and are assessed, as they are a crucial part of the process evaluation of the course.

Learning Outcomes

Objectives

The primary goal of the research project is to further stimulate students' scientific curiosity and optimally prepare them for a master's degree that logically follows the Applied Linguistics profile, and for a professional career in which language and communication are central.

Furthermore, the research project aims to further develop academic skills such as critical thinking skills, problem-solving and the ability to communicate complex information in a clear and appropriate manner.

Final competences

The student is able to report both in writing and orally, in Dutch and/or a foreign language, on the research conducted, with the use of language and register matching the assignments in the final project portfolio.

2.     The student is able to formulate a research question under supervision, effectively deploy search strategies and tools, and use appropriate research methods leading to the final project, while always acting with academic integrity.

1.     The student is able to monitor their own learning process, process feedback constructively, meet deadlines, and maintain a positive and proactive learning attitude.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 60% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Portfolio with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

    Note: Portfolio

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final mark for the Applied Linguistics Research Project is determined as follows:

·       60% of the mark comes from the final project portfolio, divided into 30% for the preparatory assignments (in the first exam session during contact moments) and 30% for the final project itself. The mark for the preparatory assignments (30%) is established on the basis of the weighted average of all assignments to be submitted.

·       The remaining 40% is determined by the oral presentation and defence of the final project portfolio.

This assessment breakdown applies for both the first and second exam sessions. However, for the second session, no contact moments will be scheduled; assessment then focuses only on the submitted assignments.

Students must pass on all main components, namely:

1) the preparatory assignments (30%)

2) the final project (30%) and

3) the oral defence (40%).

If a student scores less than 10/20 on at least one component, the lowest mark obtained on one of the three components also becomes the final mark in the first exam session. In that case, the student must retake the components of less than 10/20 in the second term. Components for which students have passed in the first exam session are carried over to the second session and added to the components to be taken in the second session.

For each assessment item, lecturers will explicitly indicate whether the use of generative AI is prohibited, limited to certain extent, or fully permitted. Non-compliance with these specifications will be considered academic fraud and will be penalised.
