Course Content

During the education, the ASO is given insights in general aspects of clinical and scientific thinking. The emphasis in the context of knowledge and sciences is on identifying clinically relevant problems and elucidating the hereby mentioned questions to be answered. This directly fits in the physician’s day-to-day work. This also forms the basis for continuous improvement of the medical thinking and acting.

This is followed by a phase in which sources are consulted. These might be: experts, scientific literature or empiric research. The most important skill herein is assessing the argumentation and validity of the concerning source (e.g. through CAT and ergotism, applied during patient discussions, cursory education and supervision). Setting up and executing scientific research can be a part in this, especially following the research lines of the department. In the case of an eminent clinically important question that doesn’t fit in these lines and hasn’t been answered in literature yet, empirical research can be used. This research then leads to a presentation and publication.

The academic aspect of the ophthalmological education at the UZ-Brussels doesn’t consist of executing empirical research, but of developing an academic attitude and general academic skills that matter for the execution of ophthalmology at a high level.

The ASO is given time to do so. The design and execution of this scientific internship is individually determined for each ASO. For this, the ASO can hand in a research plan at the educational team at all times.

CAT (Critical Appraisal of a Topic): Each ASO is obliged to execute multiple CAT’s during the education. During the discussions, time is provided for presentation and discussion on this. For each CAT, a supervising staff member is involved, who divides the CAT in agreement with the educational team, regarding the presentation.

  • Problems and insights in the operating theatre are discussed during complication discussions

  • Problems during consultations will be dealt with in patient discussions with special attention to clinical decision-making and epidemiology

  • During the educational morning sessions, the complication discussions, the patient discussions and the scientific internship, the formation of a H0 hypothesis and scientific elaboration is supervised through CAT’s.
