Course Content

For these Clinical and Social Topics, 10 themes are selected that are centered around a specific care issue. These themes depend on the current care context. By way of illustration, the following themes were selected for the academic year 2021-2022:

  • Stomach ache
  • Chronic pain
  • Fever
  • Dyspnoea
  • Failure to thrive
  • Itching
  • Rheumatology

For each theme, a multidisciplinary group of mentors from various domains will be brought together, such as GPs, specialists from the contemplative, cutting and support disciplines, professionals from the Public Health sector, ethicists and paramedics. These will jointly provide the backbone for each theme in the form of flash lectures, WPO (Tutorial, Practical or Research Methods) where desired supported by e-content and self-study.

The core values for this education are: inter- and multidisciplinary, transmural, transformative and holistic, activating and interactive. Development of problem-solving skills and proposals for therapeutic strategies, concepts of disease prevalence and use of databases become an essential element here.

Building differential diagnostics in decreasing probability, in other words, drawing up a list of hypotheses to be tested, the use of the diagnostic means (technical or biochemical) in an economically sound manner and finally proposing a therapy, requires a good knowledge of the rapidly evolving IT superhighway. . Applying evidence-based medicine is a core skill of every medical practitioner. The doctor must be aware of the sources of information that support his medical practice. In this way, the student is stimulated to formulate his uncertainties in medical practice on a daily basis and to look up in a critical way the necessary information that will further support his decisions.

Additional info

The interactive cooperation is evaluated on the basis of the preparation and / or cooperation -in group or individually- during all lectures. Insufficient preparation and cooperation can result in a Fail for the course.

Attendance is noted on the basis of lists of participants. An absence for a particular lesson can be justified on presentation of a legitimate reason (for example a medical certificate). Any reason for justifying the absence will be presented to the course lecturer. An unlawful absence for all lectures (HOC / WPO) within one topic can result in a Fail with regard to the interactive cooperation, and as such can lead to a Fail for the course unit.
