Course Content

The course offers a practical introduction to the historiography of the contemporary period (19th-21st centuries) through archives related to the place and role of Belgium and Belgians in globalisation processes. The student has to write an original monograph on a specific subject (which varies from year to year). This topic is different for each student, but is part of a larger theme that concerns a well-defined general aspect of contemporary history. In order to complete this task, the student must go through the various stages of historical research: searching and finding relevant information material, critical evaluation of that material, drafting of a synthesis. Introductory explanations by the lecturer and collective control meetings are provided to initiate and, if necessary, adjust this process. Students must submit an interim report on the status of their research by December; in the second semester, each student must also present the preliminary results of his/her research orally before the group.

Class attendance is compulsory. Unauthorised absences will be duly noted: those who miss more than two classes without a valid reason will lose two (out of 20) points out of their final evaluation. The student who does not bring the required presentation, will be registered as "absent" during the final evaluation of this part of the course.

Additional info

Both student groups (BA1 and BA2) are expected to submit a paper at the end of the project. Whereas the second year students should be an extended version of about 25-30 pages, the first year students may limit themselves to a thesis of about 15 pages. However, the requirements of the paper are identical for both groups: the thesis must reflect independently conducted research, and must meet the required criteria of a thesis (detailed introduction, context chapter, analysis, conclusion, bibliography, etc.).

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

This unit is an introduction to the practice of contemporary history (19th-20th century). The students become familiar with the basic techniques for this academic skill by carrying out a series of practical assignments. They are able to search and find relevant information (sources and academic publications); they assess and process that information finally to write an original monograph on a specific topic.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Teamwork determines 10% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 10% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 10% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 70% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Groepswerk with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Present with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Taak with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Paper with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Additional info regarding evaluation

For both student groups, individual follow-up sessions will be organised regarding their archival research.
One of the sub-tasks for both groups will concern the submission of a (reasoned) bibliography. In other words, the students have to submit a bibliography, but a version of which they can show that they have read the abstracts of the chosen articles and/or reviews of the chosen monographs/ collections.
Another subtask for both groups will be the submission of a one-pager (end of first semester) in which students clearly state the outline of their research. This one-pager can count on feedback from the lecturers and the assistant.
