Course Content

This course offers the students a practice-oriented and systematic approach of the language awareness in German compared to Dutch. Apart from a self-study package ('home package'), the course consists of two main parts:

1) A (technical) translatory and comparative component of the contrastive German-Dutch linguistics;

2) A lexical and idiomatic component of German compared with Dutch in several selected topical areas.

In the section that deals with the translatory and comparative component, the students will have to carry out translation assignments (specific translation exercises as well as text translation) that offer a range of specific translatory challenges and common difficulties with a contrastive focus. Diverse contrastive German-Dutch language description will be elaborated upon (e.g. differences in gender of nouns, expressing modality in German, use of prepositions, use of German 'es' and the translation of Dutch 'er' and 'het' into German). 

In this section, the exercises simultanuously build up and extend the German vocabulary in an integrated way. In this process, special attention will be paid to so-called 'false friends'.

The second part of this course focuses on the development of the lexical and idiomatic component of the German language in contrast to Dutch. The students will deal with a series of exercises and various texts; the exercises will focus on selected thematic areas, the use of functional words and word pairs.

Students also carry out competence-based oral exercises (including paraphrasing, oral summarising) to prepare and support written translation activities. These exercises are offered (partly) via a blended learning trajectory.

The self-study package, finally, helps students to acquire a basic vocabulary autonomously and enables them to extend their practical knowledge of lexical and idiomatic differences between German and Dutch.

1) The student has demonstrably extended and refined his or her knowledge of the German vocabulary and idiom in the aforementioned subject areas. He or she is, at the end of this course, able to translate single sentences or text units of a more general nature (level B1-B2 of the CEFR) from German into Dutch and vice versa, thereby using this newly acquired vocabulary. The student can name and motivate his/her translation choices and strategies in line with the knowledge acquired in 'Introduction to Translation'. 2) The student is able to (analytically) identify the typical challenges and difficulties that may arise when translating single sentences or text fragments of a more general nature and of a lower degree of complexity (level B1-B2 of the CEFR) into the required target language, i.e. either German or Dutch. 3) Moreover, the student also shows, in this process of the translation of single sentences or text units, that he or she is able to find adequate solutions to the aforementioned contrastive translatory problems. The student can name and motivate his/her translation choices and strategies in line with the knowledge acquired in 'Introduction to Translation'. In doing this, he or she applies the knowledge acquired in the seminar and through self-tuition (home package). Mutatis mutandis, the same applies to the competence-based oral exercises (including summarising and paraphrasing) [Applying knowledge and understanding]

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Other determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 75% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanente Evaluatie with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

First examination session:  75% written examination + 25% continuous assessment (oral and competence-based exercises)

Second examination session:  75% written examination + 25% continuous assessment (oral and competence-based exercises)

Note on the second exam session: The student has to retake both the written exam and the assignments 'permanent evaluation' (continuous assessment). The breakdown of marks remains the same. No transfer of partial exemptions from the first exam session is possible.

For each assessment component, the course instructor(s) will explicitly indicate the permissibility of using generative AI or MT tools, specifying whether its usage is prohibited, limited to certain extents, or fully permitted. Non-compliance with these specifications will be considered academic fraud and penalized accordingly.
