Course Content

Human neurophysiology of importance to the rehabilitation sciences, including somatosensory neurophysiology, motor control, neurophysiology of the stress response, balance, nociception and pain.

The practical courses entail the experimental illustration of neurophysiological mechanisms like adaptation of receptors, stress mediated pain threshold and cardiovascular changes, sympathetic nervous system reflexes, pain physiology during exercise, etc.). The practicals are given in a blended learning fashion, implying that they comprise of a combination of instruction-guided learning moments, online learning / self-learning, and project work. The experimentally collected data are interpret and reported in group reports.

Additional info

It is obliged to attend all practicals. In case of one illegal absence, the student cannot take part of the exam during the first or second period, and the total score for this educational part will be 0/20 during the first and second period. In the case of absence through illness or other legal absence, it will be possible to ask for a refresher experiment or a task in replacement of the practical course.  In case of absence the student is obliged to contact Iris.Reynebeau@vub.be immediately.

A syllabus available from the VUB Press (Nijs J, et al. Blokwijzer neurofysiologie van beweging en pijn. Dienst Uitgaven VUB) will serve as a manual during the theoretical and practical courses, as well as for studying. An English handbook (D.E. Silverthorn. Human Physiology. An integrated approach. Pearson Education inc.) is required for studying the course. The following chapters of that handbook take part of the course and obligatory study material: 8,9,10, 11 and 13.

There are no additional costs for this educational part. If you experience payment difficulties because of these additional costs, you can contact Student Social Services. More information can be found on student.vub.be/en/social-service#financial-support.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

- The student has knowledge and insight in human neurophysiology in relation to movement and rehabilitation sciences (level 3)

- The student has insight in the importance and relevance of neurophysiology for movement and rehabilitation sciences (level 3)

- The student has knowledge and insight in the way neurophysiological mechanisms can be shown experimentally (level 3)

- The student is skilled to collect, interpret and report on experimentally collected neurophysiological data (level 3)

- The student is accurate in, and reflects critical during the collection, interpretation and reporting of experimentally collected neurophysiological data (level 3)

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

    Note: open questions

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanente eva & peer assessm with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: see additional information

Additional info regarding evaluation

-If you are absent without permission for one lesson, you are not allowed to take the exam in the first and second examination period and you will receive a result code of 0/20 in both examination periods.

-The total score out of 20 is formed by the sum of the scores obtained for the practical (20%) and the exam (80%). If the student has achieved a grade lower than 8/20 for a component, the weighted average will be deviated from and the lowest partial result will serve as the exam result.

- The written exam consists of 3 open questions. The key questions as shown in the VUB syllabus 'Blokwijzer neurophysiology of movement and pain' are model questions for both the written and the optional oral exam.
- During the practicals, there is a classroom demonstration of how to process, interpret and report experimentally collected data and related literature. The final assignment includes a group assignment in which students link a neurophysiological phenomenon from everyday life to the course material and explain it in a substantiated manner. The score for the practical is based on attendance, continuous evaluation and peer assessment for the group work. For the latter, a peer factor is obtained via a self- and peer assessment that is completed by all group members. The final score for the practical will therefore be individually different for the different group members. For example, each member of the group will have to give the other group members scores in accordance with the contribution of the fellow student involved to the group work.
- HOC: The examination method is identical in the first and second examination periods.

The partial result of the WPO examination component is automatically transferred to the second examination period if the result is at least 10/20. A student cannot opt out of this automatic transfer of the partial result.

Partial results are not carried over to a subsequent academic year.

Examination of the practicals during the second examination period: if the student chooses to complete a new work assignment, the student must contact the education team no later than 1 month after receiving the scores from the first examination period.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
