Course Content

Forming the closure of the design education, the Advanced Design Studio focuses on developing a critical view and a personal design approach on a holistic level. The student is confronted with a straightforward assignment, programmatically as well as related to social questions, that should be realized within a contemporary context. The student should demonstrate profound skills to comply with all requirements, implement and deepen the acquired knowledge from bachelor and master in its entirety. Critical input on the level of concept, architectural theory and history, construction and technical equipment are indispensable to develop a coherent personal narrative and to realize the design on an independent basis.

To achieve this advanced level, the assignment tackles a confined architectural question, both in complexity and scale. This allows the student to develop an in depth and multi-layered answer in a limited amount of time. The student develops a rich set of arguments that support his/her architectural proposal.

Objectives

The assignment motivates to explore what architecture can be, or should be, now, and in the future. It invites students to express their view on architecture, and to be clear about the position they take. This view is demonstrated by specific, explicit and conscious choices made for the proposal, this on an overall level. The choices should be clear, and should be supported with multiple arguments. This way, we aim at evoking discussions between students and tutors about the objects of architecture and the means used to achieve them.

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes

The Advanced design studio I (MA2) contributes to the following learning outcomes.

The student can:

- develop a synthesized architectural response based on a clear and confined spatial question taking into account context, program, structure, material and concept with particular attention to sustainability;

- conceive design concepts by creatively integrating architectural and engineering sciences with attention to the structural, material and energy performance of buildings and structures, and their architectural value and constructability;

- design innovative structures based on cutting-edge (digital) modelling and analysis methods, and a good understanding of material and structural behaviour;

- communicate design concepts and projects effectively using state-of-the-art physical and digital representation techniques (drawings, images, renderings, and three-dimensional models);

- expand the scale of the design problem not only in space, but also in time – a crucial dimension of sustainable design – and to comprehend the multi-scalar effects of design interventions.

The student develops:

- an integrative attitude towards using issues of sustainability, ecology and energy as catalyst for creatively rethinking conventional notions of organisation, enclosure and structure;

- design skills to acquire spatial and temporal complexity in architectural projects that ensures sustainable functioning of the built environment.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Practical Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written and oral exam with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark. This is a mid-term test.

    Note: Final jury (70%)

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exam with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

    Note: Year work (30%) and Final jury (70%)

Additional info regarding evaluation

The above requirements and objectives will be used for the evaluation. The evaluation will always show the full project, including the previous phases. The evaluation will be based on the material that the student presents to the jury. The grading will consist of 30% for year work (presented during weekly guidance sessions), 70% for the final jury. The jury consists of the teachers, possibly extended with external jury members.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
