Course Content

In this course, students are introduced to the organisational structures of service provision and healthcare in Flanders. A number of important trends and developments in the professional healthcare context are highlighted and used as a framework to critically reflect on the (current) organization of service provision and care.

Following themes will be discussed:
- Contexualisation and framing: history, actors, legislative frameworks and financing mechanisms
- Organisation (structures) in health care in Flanders: child and youth services + service provision for adults (including the elderly)
- Tendencies and themes: "transitions in healthcare" and "forced care"

In addition to the lectures, students get to know the organization of service provision more in-depth, through self-study. Starting from case studies and articles in popular media, a group assignment is worked out and a workpiece (in group) is prepared.

Compulsory study material includes a text bundle + powerpoint presentations of the lectures. These are made available to the students via the digital learning platform.

2. Students can take a critical position on a number of current themes related to health care and service provision in Flanders
3. Students are able to apply knowledge of the organisation of health care provision at case level

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Group work with a relative weight of 2 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation will include a paper and a written exam.

Paper: Students create a group work; based on case vignettes, they explore the relief landscape in more depth and based on articles in popular media, they reflect critically on the organization of health care.
Exam: The exam is in writing. This is a closed book exam with theoretical and practical questions about the offered subject matter in the form of multiple choice questions and/or open questions.

Students are expected to participate in both parts of the evaluation. Students can not pass for the evaluation if they score less than 10/20 for both parts of the evaluation.

When the student fails on the total evaluation score, but passed for one of the parts, it is allowed to transfer the marks of this particular part from the first examination period to the second.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
