Course Content

The course is divided into three parts:
- Biological aspects. This part discusses the biological aspects of the aging process. The various phenomena, currently considered to cause and influence the physical aging process, are reviewed and explained for the non-biologist. Understanding biological aging helps to understand other aspects of aging.

Psychological aspects. The aging process is described from a psychological perspective. Emphasis is put on opportunities for development, the experience of aging and on coping with loss during aging.

Social Aspects
*theoretical perspectives concerning social gerontology; introduction to the variety of perspectives and highlight both their different and complementary natures;
*texts dealing with the economics and politics of ageing, with social relations and participation, with leisure and participation, with work-and care situation, with sexuality, with abuse and mistreatment are discussed,

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

To acquire the general knowledge constituting the basis of the Gerontological sciences. More specifically:
Biological aspects:
- being able to give an overview of the biological processes that result in the aging process.

Psychological aspects:
- to realize that aging is not only related to the age of the subject, but has also a psychosocial dimension in which the environment, adaptation, and coping play important roles;
- to know  the important psychological theories concerning aging;
- to describe the life course and the aging process based upon the development theories;
- to develop a positive and constructive view on aging;
- to view aging in a certain context (societal, historical, …).

Social issues:
- to get acquainted with some theoretical insights concerning social gerontology; examining the differing perspectives on the ageing process;
- to get acquainted with the social position of the elderly  ( social-economical status, social relations and participation, labour market, leisure, sexuality,  security…....);
The student gets a comprehensive introduction to be able to understand the social-economical features of the elderly population;

This course contributes to the professional role of expert and innovator. 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Psychologische gerontologie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 33.3% of the final mark.

    Note: De student is slechts geslaagd voor dit studiedeel indien hij/zij voldoende haalt op elk onderdeel. Er kan een overdracht voor een onderdeel bekomen worden vanaf 10/20.
  • Biologische gerontologie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 33.3% of the final mark.

Written examination.

Introduction to biological, psychological and social gerontology consist of 3 parts, namely biological, social and psychological. For biological gerontology a partial exam is organized in the first session exam period of the first semester (january). This implies that if a student does not succeed, he/she can only participate in the second session exam period (august/september) for this part.

For social and psychological gerontology the exam is organized in the first session exam period of the second semester (june/july).

The grades for all three parts are only made public after the june/july exam session.

 

The student only succeeds when successful in each part. Scores of at least 10/20 for a part can be transmitted to later examinations.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
