On the one hand, this course gives an overview of the main reference works and sources for the study of Early Modern History. On the other hand, a new research theme is chosen each year that provides the context for in-depth independent research by the students. In the course of this seminars, students have to complete a series of assignments that help them to gradually develop their historical research skills: analyzing and discussing relevant scholarly literature (literature assignment), writing a first exploratory paper on the basis of scholarly literature and original archival material (Christmas paper), and an oral presentation of their on-going research (presentation). The final and major assignment in the seminar consists of writing a comprehensive academic paper based on primary archival sources, secondary literature and original, independent research (final paper).
Lessons can take place face to face and/or online, depending on the corona measures imposed by the government and the availability of classrooms.
Attendance is obligatory: clear arrangements are made on this at the start of the academic year.
The students acquire the basic skills of scientific historical research with particular reference to the early modern period: they are able to find relevant scholarly studies and archival sources (heuristics), evaluate and critically analyze them (historical critique and methods) as well as draw up a research report, i.e. writing an academic ‘paper’.

If a student does not hand in or obtaines less than 50% of the marks for the "eindscriptie", the end grade is the result obtained for the component "eindscriptie" - this rule applies both to the first exam period and the resit period. Students who fail this course in the first exam period, need to submit a new version of their "eindscriptie" for the resit exam period. For the other evaluation components, the results obtained during the first exam period are maintained, unless the student alo submits new versions of one or more of these other assignments - in which case the latter versions are taken as the basis for evaluation for the resit evaluation.
