Course Content

In this course, we will analyze violence and military organization in Western and non-Western societies from Antiquity to the 1990s. Central themes in critical military studies (militarization, masculinity, military-industrial complex, total institution etc.) will be examined through case-studies of specific armed conflicts.

The student can reflect critically on:
-Themes and methods in military history, and recent developments in the research field
-Central topics and concepts in critical military studies e.g. militarization, masculinity, civil-military
relations etc.
-The causes, course and consequences of a range of armed conflicts and military actions
-The evolution and place of military organizations and culture in Belgium and abroad

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 50% of the final mark.
