Inhoud

Mobility and logistics are fundamental to contemporary societies and economies. They enable access to jobs, education, services, markets and social life, while also generating important external effects such as greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, noise, congestion, land use impacts, safety risks and social inequalities.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of mobility and logistics from an interdisciplinary perspective. It provides key definitions and concepts, introduces the transport system and its main passenger and freight components, and discusses how mobility and logistics are shaped by infrastructure, services, technologies, markets, institutions, policy choices and user behaviour.

The course combines lectures with seminars & coursework in which students work on real-world mobility and logistics challenges. The practical component of the course takes the form of a ‘hackathon’. In mixed teams, students analyse a real-world mobility or logistics challenge, identify the relevant stakeholders, environmental, social and economic impacts, and co-design an innovative business or social impact oriented solution through ideation and business modelling.

Teaching Methods

This description of the teaching methods is indicative, in order to assess the expected study load.

  • Lecture: 24 hours (includes 8x2 hours dedicated to cover the principles of sustainable mobility and logistics and guest lectures: 4 hours (2x2 hours) by practitioners, transport operators or policy makers. A site visit (4 hours) will be organised visiting a relevant site or institution in Brussels with guest lecture.
  • Practical: 16 hours
    • Students will participate in a hackathon (12 hours) to develop and pitch a solution for a mobility or logistics challenge in small groups. Attendance is mandatory during the in-class sessions (4x3 hours). The sessions give support to the students to develop their solutions through workshops on research, impact assessment, ideation, business modelling and pitching.
    • Presentation of the teamwork in front of a jury and peer students: 4 hours (mandatory attendance).
  • Self-study: 110 hours
    • Regular processing of course materials during semester (reading materials, notes, slides) amounting to 3 hour per lecture: 30 hours (10 x 3 hours)
    • Preparing for and processing the group assignments for the hackathon: 50 hours (5 x 10 hours)(additional research, group meetings, group preparations, processing the feedback sessions, preparing final presentation, preparing final group report)
    • Preparation exam: 30 hours (3,75 study days of 8 hours)

GENERAL COMPETENCES

Upon successful completion of this course unit, the student is able to:

  • Explain the core concepts, principles and trade-offs of sustainable mobility and logistics systems.

  • Describe the main components of passenger and freight transport systems and explain how infrastructure, services, users, firms, public authorities and technologies interact within these systems.

  • Analyse the environmental, social and economic impacts of mobility and logistics.

  • Explain the main factors influencing travel behaviour and logistics decision-making, and critically assess how policy, planning, pricing, information, infrastructure and service design can affect behaviour.

  • Apply conceptual frameworks and available evidence to diagnose a real-world mobility or logistics problem and, in collaboration with others and under limited guidance, develop a feasible solution proposal.

  • Justify proposed solutions by constructing a clear argument that links problem analysis, stakeholder needs, sustainability impacts and implementation constraints.

  • Communicate a mobility or logistics solution in a structured and convincing way to an academic and/or professional audience

  • Discuss transport as a business and innovation field, including the role of logistics operators, mobility service providers, public transport operators, platform-based services and emerging technologies.

  • Reflect critically on the strengths, limitations and potential unintended consequences of proposed sustainable mobility and logistics interventions.

Teamwork

Students learn to work collaboratively in small teams to develop a business-oriented solution that improves the sustainability of mobility and logistics systems.

Presentation skills

Students learn to communicate the results of their hackathon project in a concise and convincing written and oral form, including through a pitch and Q&A session before a jury and a concise written report.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:

Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Schriftelijk Examen met een wegingsfactor 60 en aldus 60% van het totale eindcijfer.

Binnen de categorie Examen Praktijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Opdracht met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.

  • The written exam (60% of the final result) consists of a number of open questions.

  • The assignment (40% of the final result) is obligatory as it is an essential part of the learning objectives of this course. It consists of:

    • Attendance of a seminar of 4 work sessions and final group presentation. The sessions involve teamwork and preparation. Students need therefore to attend all the sessions in order to fulfill the assignment.

    • A final group presentation of the developed business or societal solution in front of a jury and the other students

    • A written report describing the development of the solution and the research carried out.

  • Everyone should complete the assignment during the first semester. In case of second session, the grade of the assignment of the first session will be kept.

  • The partial result of the hackathon, with a result of at least 10/20, will be carried over to the next academic year. Students who still wish to retake the hackathon should send an e-mail to the instructor no later than September 30 of the new academic year.
