Course Content
The course (HOC+WPO) covers the basics of the physiological systems and furthers knowledge in these systems (cardiovascular physiology, endocrine physiology, gastro-intestinal system, respiratory physiology). The practical part concerns the respiratory and cardiovascular system. The students learn the theory and practical applications of the electrocardiogram, they measure the blood pressure in rest and during/after exercise. They learn what the influence is of oxygen/carbon dioxide on the respiratory system and learn to work with the peak flow meter.
Course material
Course text (Required) : Fysiologie II, Fysiologie II : Endocrien systeem, K. De Meirleir, VUB, 2220170002729, 2015
Course text (Required) : Praktische Oefeningen Fysiologie, Praktische oefeningen fysiologie, P. De Becker, J. Nijs, K. De Meirleir, VUB, 2220170002798, 2015
Handbook (Required) : Human Physiology, An Integrated Approach, Dee Unglaub Silverthorn, 7de, Pearson Education Inc, 9781292259543, 2019
Additional info
Open for incoming exchange students. Course reader and slides are in English, but classes are thought in Dutch.
It is obligatory to follow all practical sessions (WPO 100% attendance) of this course. In case of absence for legitimate reasons, the student has to personally contact the lecturer within one week of return to the VUB in order to catch up on the missed practical session(s) (new WPO date or an assignment to replace the missed WPO). In case there is no 100% attendance (due to unlawful absence), the student cannot participate in the exam (theoretical and practical part) in the first and second exam period, and the student will receive the score 0/20 in both exam periods.
Absences due to sport activities of students with an ‘Elite Sport Status’ should be communicated through the service ‘Topsport & Studie’ in order to find possible alternative dates for the courses at the start of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The goals of this course are:

HOC:
The student knows how the large physiological systems of the human body (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrinological) work.
The student understands the links between the different systems.

WPO:
The student knows the cardiovascular and respiratory control mechanisms.
The student can independently perform the basic tests for lung function and blood pressure using a spyghmomanometer and a peakflow meter.
The student can interpret and discuss the results of the basic tests for lung function and blood pressure.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 15% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 15% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen theorie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Praktisch examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Note: constitutes the WPO point together with Practical exam

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Werkboek with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

Note: constitutes the WPO point together with PRAC presentation

Additional info regarding evaluation
In case of an insufficient grade (lower than 8/20), there will not be a weighted mean, but the lowest grade will serve as the final grade. If the student obtains at least 10/20 for one part (HOC or WPO), but fails for the overall score on the course, this score (≥10/20) will automatically be transferred to the 2nd exam period. The student cannot undo this automatic transfer. There is no transfer of partial grades to the next academic year.
  • HOC: Written exam. Questions are asked that require knowledge on parts of the course.
  • WPO: Video presentation
  • WPO: Written exam: questions are asked about a the experiments they did in the WPO and the related control mechanisms and the ECG class.
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
