Course Content
The course (HOC+WPO) covers the basics of the physiological systems and furthers knowledge in these systems (cardiovascular physiology, endocrine physiology, gastro-intestinal system, respiratory physiology). The practical part relates specifically to the functioning of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and also excites students in the objective and structural representation of physiological information. Students learn the theory and application of the ECG, they measure blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate at rest, during and after exercise. Finally, they have to examine the influence of oxygen/carbon dioxide on the respiratory system and they will develop a quicksheet.
Course material
Course text (Required) : Menselijke Fysiologie, Fysiologie II : Endocrien systeem, K. De Meirleir, VUB
Handbook (Required) : Human Physiology, An Integrated Approach, Dee Unglaub Silverthorn, 8de, Pearson Education Inc, 9781292259543, 2019
Additional info
Open for incoming exchange students. Course reader and slides are in English, but classes are thought in Dutch.
Attendance during WPOs is not mandatory but is recommended. For the recommended attendance at the WPOs, there can be no deviation from the group assignment on Canvas.
Learning Outcomes

General competencies

HOC:
- The student can independently describe the functioning and structure of the major physiological systems of the body, specifically, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, gastrointestinal physiology, and endocrine physiology.
- The student will be able to independently describe the basic interactions between the various physiological systems.

WPO:
- The student is able to use a blood pressure and heart rate monitor correctly independently, for application to self and others.
- The student is independently able to describe, critically interpret, and physiologically explain the basic effects of certain conditions (e.g., rest and exercise) on blood pressure, heart rate, and lung function.
- The student is able to clarify physiological principles in group in a visual, correct, yet simple manner in the form of a Quicksheet.
- The student is independently able to describe the various steps in the electrical signal of the heart, and to link this in a fundamental way to the mechanistic system of the heart
- The student is familiar with the different pathologies that can be linked to an altered electrical signal in the heart, and can explain in his/her own words briefly how this pathology arises and what the consequences are.
- The student is able to think critically and speculate in a group about the workings of the various physiological systems seen.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
PRAC Teamwork determines 5% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen theorie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Praktisch examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Note: vormt samen met Examen Praktijk totaalpunt WPO

Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Werkboek with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 5% of the final mark.

Note: vormt samen met WPO presentatie totaalpunt WPO

Additional info regarding evaluation

This subject consists of two parts, the written exam theory and the WPO part that consists of two components (1: written exam WPO and 2: the Quicksheet).

In case there is a fail (a grade lower than 8/20) on one of the two components, the weighted average will be deviated from and the lowest grade will be used as the final grade. If the student scored at least 10/20 on any component (total WPO or HOC), but fails the course, this grade (≥10/20) will automatically carry over to the second term. A student cannot waive the automatic transfer of the partial grade. No partial grades will be transferred to a subsequent academic year.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
