The most recent data on nutritional intake in Belgium are used as an introduction. Comparisons with other countries are made and WHO standerds are applied. Different national and international indexes for the quality of nutrition are calculated and compared.
The recommendations concerning healthy nutrition are discussed very profoundly. Healthy options for the different macro nutrient groups are proposed.
Specific items concerning healthy nutrition and claims are analysed (e.g. plant based nutrition, acid-base balance, anti oxidants, artificial nutrients, functional foods, fibre…
Using the different International Position statements concerning sports nutrition, evolution of sports nutrition is documented.
Usinginternational position stands from specific disciplines (soccer, athletics) complexity of sports nutrition is demonstrated.
Guideline concerning nutritional intake before-, during and after training and competition in different disciplines are discussed (endurance, power, disciplines with weight categories).
Special attention goes to the critical analysis of the efficiency of nutritional strategies in function of performance (sport drinks, supplement use…).
Finally the healthier options for sport nutrition components are discussed.
Practical sessions:
The student makes an analysis of his own nutritional needs (physical activity diary) and his nutritional intake (7 day diary and food frequency questionnaire) with regard to the recommendation in his or her own specific sport but equally with regard to the recommendations for a healthy nutrition.
After establishing the discrepancies between intake and recommendations corrections to the nutritional intake are proposed, re-analysed and compared with the different guidelines.

Concerning the practical sessions, students can get support by NUBEL software for the analysis of the food diary.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 50% of the final mark.

Written exam concerning the theoretical background (50%), evaluation on the nutritional workbook (50%). The workbook needs to be handed in the 3rd week after easter holiday. Failing to meet this deadline means that the work will only be analyzed for the seccond session.
