Inhoud

The course Introduction to English linguistics and grammar consists of three parts. The first, introductory, part briefly discusses the concepts of language, English, and linguistics. The other two parts offer a detailed overview of the structure and characteristics of standard British English (Received Pronunciation). Part 2, Phonetics and Phonology, discusses the sound system of English. Part 3, Morphology, deals with the structure of words in English. It also discusses the formal and functional properties of the word classes (or parts of speech) in English as well as how English words combine to form phrases.

The theoretical discussions are illustrated with ample examples and put to practice in the exercice sessions (13 hours).

Algemene competenties

The courses English linguistics and grammar and English Linguistics II collectively offer a general introduction to the scientific study of the English language. They aim to provide
a) a comprehensive overview of key principles and concepts in the scientific study of human language in general and English in particular, including the specialised terminology of linguistics;
b) a detailed overview of the basic structure (or 'grammar') of contemporary standard British English (its phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax).

By the end of the course English Linguistics II students are expected to be able to use the specialized linguistic terminology and to have sufficient insight into the grammar of contemporary standard British English to begin the more advanced study of the English language and its varieties.

Beoordelingsinformatie

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Schriftelijk bepaalt 70% van het eindcijfer

ZELF Praktijkopdracht bepaalt 30% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

examen schriftelijk met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 70% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Students who have not completed all assessment components are unable to pass the course

Binnen de categorie ZELF Praktijkopdracht dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

praktijkopdracht met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 30% van het totale eindcijfer.

The final mark for this course is determined by the weighted average of the marks obtained on the following:
• Coursework carried out during the semester : 30%
• Written examination: 70%

Students who have not completed all assessment components are unable to pass the course.

Assessment in the second examination session is carried out on the basis of an oral examination (40%) and a written examination (60%).

Scores for individual assessment components cannot be carried over from one examination period to another, or from one academic year to a subsequent academic year.
