This course focuses on the structure and functions of words and sentences. The course offers students an introduction to the study of Dutch words, flexional morphology, sentences and syntax.
On the one hand, we discuss the morphosyntactic properties of words and the internal structure of phrases: the parts of speech and their functions within different types of constituents in Dutch. Special attention will be paid to the flexional properties of nouns, adjectives and verbs, and in passing, we will stress the interrelatedness of morphology, syntax and semantics.
On the other hand, we elaborately focus on Dutch syntax from a structuralist perspective, discussing the syntactic properties and functions of clause constituents in simple and complex sentences (a.o. zinsrelator, subject, objecten, gezegdes, complementen, satellieten, modificeerders). Building on this, we will also discuss several word order phenomena in Dutch: we will analyze the order of subjects, verbs and objects in various types of main and subordinate clause types, and offer a typological overview of Dutch syntax in terms of ‘poles’ and ‘fields’.
The theoretical concepts introduced in this part of the course will be put to practice in a series of exercise sessions, where students can practice their command of the most important concepts from the course in the form of practical word and sentence level analyses.
Finally, students are also expected to write a paper for this course. This will mainly report on a literature study on a (applied) linguistic topic of their choice, along with a small-scale empirical study. Possible topics for this paper can be drawn from the subjects dealt with in any of the Dutch linguistics courses, but need not be restricted to those subjects. A portion of the course hours will be devoted to preparation for this linguistic investigation.
Teaching may take place in a face to face manner and/or in a digital manner, depending on the situation. Live classes may be recorded.
Handouts and slides from class, in the form of a syllabus, are the essential study material for this course, supplemented by elaborate course notes taken by each student during class.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

If a student does not participate in or does not hand in the required assignment for one of the evaluation modules for the course, he or she will receive a partial grade of 0/20 for that evaluation module.
Partial grades can be transferred to a later exam session within the same academic year, at the written request of the student (before the start of the exam period).
Late submissions of assignments, papers or other tasks will be accepted until 48 hours after the deadline. For submissions up to 24 hours after the deadline (to be submitted by email and on paper), the student's result will be lowered by 15%, and for submissions between 24 and 48 hours after the deadline (also to be submitted by email and on paper), the student's result will be lowered by 30%. Submission that are more than 48% late will not be evaluated anymore and will be marked as an 'absence'. All deadlines hold for both digital as well as paper copies.
