Course Content

This course focuses on the structure and functions of words and sentences, and building on the course 'Bouwstenen van het Nederlands: klank, woord, zin', this course offers students an introduction to the study of Dutch words, flexional morphology, sentences and syntax.
In a first part, we offer an introduction to the morphosyntax of Dutch. We elaborately focus on Dutch syntax from a structuralist perspective, discussing the syntactic properties and functions of clause constituents in simple and complex sentences (a.o. zinsrelator, subject, objecten, gezegdes, complementen, satellieten, modificeerders). In a second part, we use case teaching to delve deeper into several important themes and concepts in Dutch linguistics, both theoretically and from an everyday language practice perspective. The theoretical concepts covered will be linked to practical applications with a mixture of lectures and exercise sessions throughout the course.
Finally, students are also expected to write a paper for this course. This will mainly report on a literature study on a (applied) linguistic topic of their choice, along with a small-scale empirical study. Possible topics for this paper can be drawn from the subjects dealt with in any of the Dutch linguistics courses, but need not be restricted to those subjects. A portion of the course hours will be devoted to preparation for this linguistic investigation.

2. Students can independently carry out a range of (morpho)syntactic analyses on known and new examples of simple and complex sentences, applying theoretical concepts to authentic language material. [Dublin-descriptor: toepassen kennis en inzicht]
3. Students are able to discuss and relate seen case studies to theory, and are able to generate similar insights from unseen material or based on unseen examples or questions related to similar themes [Dublin-descriptor: toepassen kennis en inzicht]
4. Students acquire the necessary skills to independently describe and analyze known and new examples from a (morpho)syntactic point of view. [Dublin-descriptor: leervaardigheden]
5. Under supervision, students can plan and carry out a small-scale literature and empirical study about a linguistic topic of their choice. [Dublin-descriptor: toepassen kennis en inzicht + oordeelsvorming]
