Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Psychiatry in general 

The student is able to sum up the different mental functions and elements of the psychiatric assessment and is able to apply this in a systematized manner in an exemplary case.  

The student is able to distinguish the different types of psychiatric classification and diagnosis and is able to clarify the structure of the DSM classification system. Furthermore the student is able to apply this on a case. 

The student can define psychiatric epidemiology and has knowledge of prevalence data with respect to the major psychiatric syndromes.  

The student is able to describe and recognize the risk and protection factors responsible for the etiology and development (pathogenesis) of psychiatric syndromes. Furthermore the student is able to apply this on a case. 

The student is able to name and explain the different biological determinants of psychiatric syndromes (physiopathogenesis). 

The student is able to name and explain the different psychological and social determining factors of psychiatric syndromes (psychopathogenesis). 


Psychiatric syndromes (DSM5)

The student is able to describe and illustrate the symptomatology of this syndrome. He/she is able to explain the differential diagnosis, present the epidemiological data, show that he/she has insight in the different causal and maintaining factors of biological, psychological and social type, and finally is able to indicate which treatment interventions can be used in a treatment plan for a patient suffering from this syndrome.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Theoretical knowledge about major psychiatric disorders is examined by written exam (open questions) in first and second examination period.
