Course Content

The French Practice I course is based on an innovative method. It is an action-oriented and immersive course placing diversity and international agility as a key element for learning the French language in our Brussels, European, international and academic context. It is aimed at students following the Languages and Literature program, students in Translation and Interpretation and all other students interested in learning French at CEFR level B2.

The course is designed as a back and forth journey between literature and linguistics, discourse and history, the subjective and the objective, speech and narrative, the event, the lexicon and the syntax.  Unlike traditional FLE courses, the courses are also a space for critical reflection and exchange . The Pratique du français I course is an intensive French course with a strong focus on oral and written expression. The system includes both face-to-face and distance learning hours. Cultural activities are planned.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Permanente Evaluatie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation procedure is based on a partnership between students and their teacher. This will result in the elaboration of an individual and collective pedagogical contract at the beginning of the semester. Exercises and reflection/evolution sessions will be organized. They aim to anchor knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills in terms of language and communication objectives (reception, production, interaction and mediation + language communicative skills), academic objectives and Community Engaged Research and Learning skills. The skills assessment will be delivered at the end of the course. A description of all the tests will be detailed during the course and through CANVAS.  If you obtain an average of 14/20 and + on the permanent assessment, you will be exempted from the June exam. The June exam is 50% oral (portfolio defence with integrated tests) and 50% written (integrated writing test). The second session is 50% oral (oral presentation of the portfolio with integrated tests) and 50% written (integrated writing test).
