Course Content

The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the variety of genres in which contemporary Italian manifests itself and how register and genre variation correlate with structural aspects of the language. To this end, we take as our starting point the theoretical and methodological framework of corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics (Cresti & Panunzi 2013; Cresti & Moneglia 2016).Students will explore sample texts and datasets using qualitative and quantitative analysis. The qualitative component will focus on identifying different lexical, syntactic or pragmatic case studies that characterize each register, genre and text type. In the quantitative component, students will have to operationalize the previously identified phenomena in order to examine those on a larger scale in Italian corpora and datasets. Students will also learn the basic notions of Excel, AntConC and CQL for data processing.

L'obiettivo principale di questo corso è quello di familiarizzarsi con la varietà di generi in cui si manifesta l'italiano contemporaneo e di studiare come le variazioni di registro e di genere correlano con gli aspetti strutturali della lingua. Il nostro punto di partenza è il quadro teorico e metodologico della linguistica dei corpora e della sociolinguistica (Cresti & Panunzi 2013; Cresti & Moneglia 2016). Gli studenti andranno ad esplorare testi esemplari e banche dati attraverso un'analisi sia qualitativa che quantitativa. La parte qualitativa si concentrerà sull'identificazione di diversi fenomeni lessicali, sintattici o pragmatici dell'italiano, che gli studenti dovranno a loro volta ‘operazionalizzare’ nella parte quantitativa per indagare su scala più ampia in corpora e dataset italiani. Gli studenti impareranno anche le nozioni di base di Excel, AntConC e il linguaggio di interrogazione CQL per l'elaborazione dei dati.

General competencies

The student learns to motivate the building blocks of empirical and, more specifically, corpus linguistic research and to operationalize them into a concrete study. At the end of the course, each student presents the research hypotheses and/or preliminary results of his a personal paper during a seminar.

Lo studente impara a motivare e mettere in pratica gli elementi costitutivi di una ricerca linguistica empirica e più specificamente basata su corpora. Alla fine del corso è previsto un seminario in cui ogni studente presenterà le ipotesi di ricerca e/o i risultati preliminari del proprio lavoro su un tema concordato.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written part of the examination (80%): paper that elaborates on a corpus linguistic issue.

Oral part of the examination (20%): presentation of preliminary research questions and results of the case study, at the end of the semester

La parte scritta dell'esame (80%) prevede la redazione di un saggio con un analisi empirica/corpus-based di un fenomeno linguistico.

La parte orale dell'esame (20%) prevede una presentazione in classe, alla fine del semestre, dei risultati preliminari della propria analisi.
