This course aims to discuss economic structures, interactions and principles in a concrete historical context, in particular Classical Antiquity.
The first meetings discuss the context and background of the ancient economies. The course continues with the relevant theoretical concepts and models, the available primary sources, and the demographic situation, ecological context and technological developments will be analysed.
Based on the reading and through analysis of the historical sourcces, the remaining meetings are dedicated to the main issues and sectors of the Greek economy. Focus will be on economic developments and the way these influenced the society in the Greek polis.

The student is familiar with the main sources for studying the socio-economic and demographic history of Classical Antiquity. The student is familiar with the major movements in historiography of the socio-economic and demographic history of Classical Antiquity. The student is aware of the recent contributions to the debate on the demographic and socio-economic history of Classical Antiquity and is able to take and defend his/her own point of view with regard to the statements in this debate.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

The final grade is based on individual assignments concerning the studied sources and modern literature and a written exam (each 50% of the final grade). The written exam will assess whether the student is sufficiently familiar with the main sources for the study of the socio-economic history of Classical Antiquity and with the major trends in historiography and the most recent contributions to the debate.
