Course Content

The following sub-topics are studied: this history of collecting (situated in its political, socio-economic and cultural context); the role of museums in the 21st century; development of museums/collections and ethics; the interaction with the public: a. different approaches to exhibiting, b. the phenomenon of 'blockbuster' exhibitions, c. the museum and the new media; practical aspects of building exhibitions; principles of museum management.

The subject material is offered on the one hand via lectures and on the other hand via reading assignments, which are then discussed during traditional seminars or via a discussion forum on the learning platform.
Different museological aspects are examined via extramural activities. One or more specialists from museum practice may provide more explanation in this. The students must finally critically consider a museum of their choice from the visitor’s standpoint.

Nr 3 Holders of a Bachelor's degree in the Arts and Archaeology combine that knowledge with an understanding of a broad cultural and social context and have an insight into how artistic production and material culture can serve as vectors for changing cultural, social, economic and ideological values.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
PRAC Teamwork determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: (50%) Mondeling met schriftelijke voorbereiding: beantwoorden van twee synthesevragen die peilen naar de verworven inzichten in een groter geheel van de cursus.

Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Inbreng with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Note: (20%) Inbreng in de discussiefora en kritische reflectie over hun inhoud.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Museumopdracht with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Note: (30%) Schriftelijke museumopdracht + mondelinge bespreking op het examen

Additional info regarding evaluation

1.    (35%) Oral with written preparation: answering two synthesis questions that assess the insights acquired in a larger whole in the course.
2.    (20%) Contribution in the discussion fora and critical reflection on their content.
3.    (45%) Written museum assignment + oral discussion on the examination.

If a student fails for the part ‘discussion fora’ during the first examination period, the student will get in the second examination period a paper assignment that covers the same content as the discussion fora.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
