Course Content

The course starts with an explanation on how the basic physical conservation laws (mass, energy, momentum) can be used to describe the motion of water in rivers and conduit networks. Next, different flow conditions are described: uniform flow, permanent, gradually varied flow - with the calculation of backwater curves -, rapidly varied flow and non-permanent flow. Finally, an introduction to sediment transport and morphology and to water quality processes in rivers is provided.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 67% of the final mark.
PRAC Report determines 33% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 67% of the final mark.

    Note: Open boek voorbereiding (10 minuten), vervolgens gesloten boek. Tijdens het examen over de theorie wordt nagegaan of de student de begrippen goed onder de knie heeft en ook kan toepassen. Er wordt gevraagd naar begrippen, afleidingen van vergelijkingen, besprekingen en toepassingen die niet noodzakelijk in de nota's staan maar waarvoor de vereiste basis in de cursus werd behandeld.

Within the PRAC Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Evaluation of exercise reports with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 33% of the final mark.

    Note: Bij de evaluatie van de verslagen van de oefeningen wordt naast de kwantitatieve resultaten ook rekening gehouden met de zin voor synthese en analyse die uit het verslag blijkt en met de vormgeving. Het bijwonen van de oefeningensessies is verplicht. Bij afwezigheid zal de student 0/20 worden gequoteerd voor de betreffende oefening.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Open book preparation (10 minutes), followed by closed book examination.
Written and oral.


During the examination, it is assessed if the student understands the concepts and if the student can apply them. Questions relate to concepts, derivation of equations and applications. These must not necessarily be limited to what is stated in the notes, but will be based on the theory and exercises that have been discussed with the students during the course.

The evaluation of the exercise reports will be based on the quantitative results, by the sense of synthesis and analysis that is demonstrated by the student and on the general presentation aspects. The attendance of the exercise sessions is compulsory. In case of absence, the student will be graded 0/20 for the particular exercise.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
