4 ECTS credits
110 u studietijd
Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 1004153BNR voor alle studenten in het 1e semester met een verdiepend bachelor niveau.
The course starts with an explanation on how the basic physical conservation laws (mass, energy, momentum) can be used to describe the motion of water in rivers and conduit networks. Next, different flow conditions are described: uniform flow, permanent flow, gradually varied flow - with the calculation of backwater curves -, rapidly varied flow and non-permanent flow. Finally, an introduction to sediment transport and morphology is provided.
Slides and additional material are made available on Canvas and Université Virtuelle.
The course can be taught in a hybrid format (online/on-campus).
Examination requirements
The student knows and understands the basic principles and equations used in open channel hydraulics.
The student can apply the knowledge on uniform flow to design hydraulic structures.
The student can determine flow profiles in rivers (so-called backwater sketching).
The student can explain the basic concepts of sediment transport, morphology.
The course contributes to the following programme outcomes of the Bachelor in Engineering Sciences:
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has a broad fundamental knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to analyse key engineering processes and to investigate new and emerging technologies.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has a broad fundamental knowledge and understanding of integrated design methods according to customer and user needs with the ability to apply and integrate knowledge and understanding of other engineering disciplines to support the own specialisation engineering one.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences can define, classify, formulate and solve engineering problems, identify the constraints and is able to delimit and formulate the tasks in order to submit these to a critical examination and to check the solutions for their sustainability and social relevance.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences can conduct open dialogues, discussions and negotiations, and can write scientific reports and to hold presentations using the most modern ICT technologies.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences can work in team, shows creativity and entrepreneurship, and has intellectual mobility.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has a creative, problem-solving, result-driven and evidence-based attitude, aiming at innovation.
The Bachelor in Engineering Sciences has more advanced fundamental knowledge and understanding of the behaviour of fluids and can apply this knowledge to solve basic engineering problems (LO19).
De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 67% van het eindcijfer
Examen Schriftelijk bepaalt 33% van het eindcijfer
Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:
Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:
Oral exam on the theoretical concepts seen during the lectures:
During the examination, it is assessed if the student understands the concepts and if the student can apply them. Questions relate to concepts, derivation of equations and applications. These must not necessarily be limited to what is stated in the notes, but will be based on the theory and exercises that have been discussed with the students during the course.
Written exam on the exercises:
The evaluation of the exercise exam will be based on the quantitative results, by the sense of synthesis and analysis that is demonstrated by the student and on the general presentation aspects.
