Course Content

The literary-historical theme of the city is treated in novels/poetry f.i. from/about the fin de siècle/interbellum or in novels/poetry about one big city (f.i. Paris).

During the analysis sessions narratological concepts and reading methods such as close reading & isotopical reading are learned. One or two sessions will be devoted to written assignments.

Additional info

This course is taught in Dutch. The students receive hand-outs and powerpoints, and take notes during class.

For each course, students must prepare texts and secondary literature in connection with the texts and methods discussed.

For the required literature there is a reader (with f.i. books) in which primary texts and secondary literature concerning the discussed texts and methods is foreseen.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

-The student is able to independently interpret texts presented to him or her and has general insight into the authors and periods studied.

- He or she also has insight into the connection between the texts and their context, and into the structure of the works/series/collections.

- In analyzing the individual texts, the student is able to apply the primary methods for analyzing texts and to explain the proper terms used.

- Additional excercises teach students to find secondary literature and to write analyses in which they can demonstrate that they can discuss texts and situate them in the context of their creation.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Note: Oral examination with written preparation (min. 15 minutes). Students cannot pass if they do not master the Standard Dutch language. The written preparation for the oral examination serves only as support for the students, is issued unchanged at the end of the examination and will not be assessed.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Permanente evaluatie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Note: Reading sheets. Only for the second term the permanent evaluation can be replaced by a written assignment.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Schrijfoefeningen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If the student uses GenAI as a supporting tool, he/she must report on the use of AI in an appropriate and responsible manner. The student remains fully responsible for the content of his/her work, regardless of the sources used. Only students that handed in all tasks in time can take part in the oral examination.

A study guide provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester clarifies the assessment in a binding fashion.

For the second examination period all tasks must be handed in before 31st of July.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
