Course Content

Thorough analysis of about five recently published novels that are important for the Dutch novel development. Next to this, a short historic overview is given of the novel evolution from experiment to postmodernism. Here, attention is paid to Frans Kellendonk, A.F.Th. van der Heijden, Jeroen Brouwers, Willem Jan Otten, P.F. Thomése, etc

General competencies

- Students know literary prose of the last decennia.
- Students have insight into the specific properties of fictional prose, especially by studying the relationship between fiction and reality/history.
- The student can analyse a complex literary text in a critical and scientific way. They do this by making use of the applied methodologies. They will give evidence of an independent and creative ability, and are capable of communicating in group and reflecting on the gained insights

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 40% of the final mark.
Other determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Referaat with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Paper with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Permanente evaluatie with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Note: Enkel voor de tweede zittijd kan de permanente evaluatie vervangen worden door een schriftelijke opdracht.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Only for the second examination period the permanent evaluation is replaced by a written task. Tasks for the second examination period must be handed in before 31st of July. The mandatory evaluation is specified in a study manual provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester.
