Course Content

The central focus is on the development of genres from Italian literature in the19th century and in the early 20th century (narrative texts and poetry). Rather than providing a traditional description of “life and work” of a number of authors, the emphasis is placed on the internal development of literary genres in the Italian historical and cultural context.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The students learn to see the connections between literary works belonging to the classical genres of Italian literature in the19th and early 20the century (narrative texts and poetry) and can explain the content and form characteristics of individual literary work with appropriate terminology (material presented in lectures, individual exercises on text fragments; reading).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exam genres,texts,reading with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

    Note: Closed questions on the genres and texts discussed in the lectures (see the syllabus and chapters from Casadei-Santagata). Question for possible clarification of the assignments submitted.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Exercices (papers) with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

    Note: The students must submit a first draft during the semester of the assignments and will be given feedback about them. The final submission of the assignments will be done in the period before the examination.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Preparation and collaboration with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

    Note: Weekly attendance at the classes and classroom collaboration is required.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students are expected to prepare text extracts on a weekly basis. These are always discussed in the lectures. Attendance to the lectures is therefore essential and will be evaluated.

The first drafts of the exercises will be evaluated during the semester.

Students have to succeed in all parts of the evaluation procedure in order to obtain a pass mark for the whole course.

Student who fail to participate in all the parts of the evaluation procedure will be automatically marked as "absent".

Students can transfer to the next exam session the results of those parts of the evaluation process for which they have obtained a pass mark. These result can not be transferred to the following academic year.

At the oral exam, the students are granted with preparation time
