Course Content

The course content consists of individual labour law, parts of labour regulation, collective labour relationships, aspects of social security, as well as core concepts of social enforcement law including topics such as criminal enforcement. 

During the introductory lectures, attention is paid to the main features of social law. The links with other fields of law and the hierarchy of (social) law norms are also discussed.

Furthermore, various aspects of individual labour law, collective labour law and labour regulation are analyzed. For example, the regulations governing individual employment agreements, the doctrine of collective labour agreements, but also the concepts of wage and working time, will be discussed.

The basic principles of Belgian social security and the main characteristics of its various components are also addressed.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

  • The student has a general knowledge of Belgian social legislation;
  • The student is able to situate essential concepts concerning Belgian social legislation in the correct context and can interpret these concepts in a valid legal manner;
  • The student has insights into the regulations concerning labour law and social security law;
  • The student controls the approach and instruments specific to labour law and social security law;  
  • The student is able to analyze a basic problem and to formulate a valid legal solution, taking into account the relevant regulations.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The written exam consists of several components.

The multiple-choice section will be graded by using positive scoring with a higher caesura. No points are deducted for wrong answers. However, scoring by guessing will be included in the final grade by increasing the pass mark (= caesura). More information on the examen, including the caesura and the exact conversion table, will be communicated on Canvas in a timely manner.
