In this course, thematically related poems are compared. A trend (e.g. surrealism after 1945) or a genre (e.g. current historical poetry, elegy) is analysed in detail, or an institutional phenomenon (poetry selections and magazines), poetry in new media) is studied, an aspect of poetry study (e.g. pathos and emotion) or a theme from the visual arts (e.g. portret, landscape) is covered.
This course is taught in Dutch. The students take notes during class and will receive hand-outs. A reader with texts will be made available.
Additional study material will be communicated during the classes.
- The student has knowledge about the thematic coherence of poems, the international embedding of poets, and /or the diachronic tradition of poetic genres. He/she also has insight into the functioning and effect of a modern poem, and of its relationships with other texts.
- The student is able to analyze a complex poem in a critical and scientific way. He/she does so by means of the presented methodologies. In addition, he/she shows an independent and creative ability, and he/she is capable to communicate in a group and reflect about the gained insights.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 40% of the final mark.

Paper (with prior oral presentation), oral exam (primarily a defence of the paper) and permanent evaluation. Only for the second examination period the permanent evaluation is replaced by a written task. Tasks for the second examination period must be handed in before 31st of July.
In a study manual provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester, the evaluation is detailed in a binding way.
