This class consists of following topics:

- Natural history of type 1 diabetes, needs for intervention

- Belgian Diabetes Registry, network for patients of today and tomorrow

- Beta cell markers, indicators for diagnosis and therapy

- Beta cell replacement, progress and limitations

- Stem cells, sources for cell therapy products

- Immune tolerance, partner in therapeutic strategies

- Microbiome, network for thoughts on partnership

- EU-programs in related R&D areas, rationale of aims

At the end of this course, students should understand the role of pancreatic beta cells in diabetes, impact of diabetes in society, and strategies of beta cell therapy in diabetes....

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • critical discussion about pape with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Students select a paper from a list compiled by the coordinator. In this paper, diabetes is the main theme. Evaluation is based on a critical discussion about the chosen study in an oral examination
