7 ECTS credits
194 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1007103ANR for all students in the 2nd semester at a (A) Bachelor - preliminary level.
Using examples and problems encountered in modern medicine and biomedical applications, the course's objective is to explain concepts in medical physics relevant to the scientific training of medical specialists, pharmacologists and biomedical scientists.
The course is organized in modules, each of which focus on topics in general physics. At the core of each module one or more biomedical questions are identified to initiate the explanation of concepts and methodologies that are required to understand the basic physics.
During the interactive sessions, selected exercises provide extra insight in biomedical physics.
Modules:
Basic principles of kinematics and dynamics of solid structures, work and energy: Influence of forces and torques on the human body
Basic principles of statics and dynamics of fluids: Hart and vessels, surface tension and viscosity
Basic principles of gas laws and thermodynamics: Lungs and diffusion
Vibrations and waves: Optics and sound with special attention to lenses, endoscopes, lasers and ultra sound imaging
Basic principles of electricity and electromagnetism: Nerves, electrical currents and elecromagnetic waves
Basic principles of radiation physics: Medical imaging, radiotherapy and radiation protection
During interactive sessions, selected exercises provide extra insight in biomedical physics. Questions concerning the lectures are answered.
Attendance of lectures and exercise sessions is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
The handouts of all lectures can be found on Canvas
The student is able to describe and explain basic concepts in general physics.
The student is able to make connections between different physical concepts and derive physical principles.
The student understands the physical basis of biomedical applications and techniques.
The student is able to clarify biomedical applications and techniques using the underlying physical principles.
The student can solve practical problems in a team.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
1st session:
A written interim evaluation is organized (around the 5th to 6th week of the 2nd semester, the exact date will be communicated during the academic year). Participation in this interim evaluation is mandatory. The interim evaluation evaluates the subject matter of part 1: Mechanics. The final grade is calculated as follows:
- 5% permanent evaluation
- 20% result written interim evaluation
- 75% result written exam
If the student passes the interim evaluation, the student is also exempted for Part 1: Mechanics on the written exam. If the student passes the interim evaluation, the student must only solve the questions about Parts 2 to 6 for the written exam.
2nd session:
Written exam 100%. The written exam second session covers all parts of the course. All students who are postponed to the second session will solve questions about all parts of the course. The result of the mid-term evaluation is not applicable. There is no resit possible for the permanent evaluation.
