Course Content

Clinical Skills and Stages II consists of four major components:

1. Skills Education

2. Communication

3. Internships

4. Medical French

1. Skills Education

Skills education is made up of 4 learning lines in which different skills are taught. In Clinical Skills and Internships II, the following learning lines are discussed:

• FIRST AID

• Medical and nursing skills

• Resuscitation in the form of Basic Life Support for adults and children

• History and physical examination

A detailed overview of the topics taught is available on Canvas.

2. Communication

The student learns how to conduct a consultation following the consultation model. This involves practicing skills to obtain and provide information to the patient in a professional manner, taking into account the patient's perspective.

3. Internships

• General Practice Internship:
The general practice internship lasts for 1 week, focusing on learning and practicing basic practical skills. It also serves as an introduction to the field of general practice medicine and an introduction to collaboration within healthcare.

• Care Internship:
The care internship takes place in July-August-September, between Clinical Skills and Internships I and II, and lasts for a maximum of 7 days. Each student chooses/plans this within the given time slots in consultation with the coordinator. The internship takes place in the Emergency Department and/or another nursing department at UZ Brussel (depending on the availability of nursing departments). Each student is guided daily by assigned nurses designated by the head nurse or care coordinator.

4. Medical French

The students apply the basic principles of French grammar and medical vocabulary and learn to carry out a correct system anamnesis in French.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • beoordeling gedoceerde topics with a relative weight of 60 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Note: This concerns the "exam skills training and communication". Within this category, the topics taught in skills training and communication are evaluated in the form of station tests. The oral and practical exam takes place in the examination period in June.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • beoordeling huisartsenstage with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Note: Within the category 'Practical Exam’ the points are taken into account for the GP internship and the care internship.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Additional info regarding evaluation

1. Evaluation Clinical Skills and Internships II
The endpoint for Clinical Skills and Internships II consists of a weighted average of the endpoint for continuous assessment (20%), internships (20%) and the Skills Education and Communication exam (60%). You must pass each of those parts (get at least 50%) before the weighted average is made. If you fail for one of those components, your final grade for the subject Clinical Skills and Internships II will be equal to the lowest grade obtained.

• Permanent evaluation (20%)

For the skills education, Communication, and medical French component, there is a separate permanent evaluation where each is scored out of 20 points after all lessons. You must pass each of these separate components (achieve at least 50%) before the average is calculated. If you fail any of these permanent evaluations, your final grade for the "permanent evaluation of Clinical Skills and Internships II" will be equal to the lowest grade obtained.

You must pass the permanent evaluation of Clinical Skills and Internships II in order to participate in the exam for Clinical Skills and Internships II, both in the first and second exam sessions. If a student does not pass the permanent evaluation, this will be communicated personally to the student before the start of the exam period.

Continuous assessment of skills education: In each class, 3 out of 5 points are awarded for preparation, participation, and professional attitude. Preparation involves preparing for the lesson, participation evaluates active engagement in the class, and professional attitude includes adhering to hygiene measures and punctuality. Failure to comply with hygiene measures or being late to class results in a minimum deduction of 2.5 out of 5 points for that class.

The final score for the "permanent evaluation of skills education" is calculated by averaging all scores per class.

Attendance is mandatory for the Clinical Skills and Internships II course from the first organized WPO, regardless of the registration timing for the course component. An unjustified absence will result in a score of 0 out of 20 for the final score of the "permanent evaluation of skills education".

Up to 3 different topics may be missed with valid justification in order to pass the permanent evaluation. Missing more topics will result in a score of 0 out of 20 for the final score of the "permanent evaluation of skills education".

Any absence must be communicated to skillslab@vub.be, the faculty secretariat, and the relevant instructors by the end of the day. A valid medical certificate must be provided within the specified timeframe (see OER for details). Failure to comply with these rules will result in the absence being considered unjustified.

Permanent evaluation communication:
The permanent evaluation is assessed across all work sessions based on the following criteria:

-Timely submission of tasks
-Preparation for work sessions
-Attitude during classes: respectful interaction with others/tasks/oneself
Failing to meet the requirements in one or more of these three points will result in an insufficient final score for the communication permanent evaluation: the lowest achieved score will be considered the final score for the communication permanent evaluation.

• Skills education and communication exam (60%)
The Clinical Skills and Internships II exam consists of various station tests. Participation in the exam requires completing all stations (both skills and communication stations). Students must report to the skillslab staff 15 minutes before the start time (the individual schedule will be communicated on Canvas before the exam period) by presenting their student card. Failure to adhere to hygiene measures upon registration will result in a deduction of points from the "final exam score". If a student arrives after the start time but before the exam begins, this will also lead to a deduction of points from the "final exam score". Students who arrive after the exam start time will not be allowed to participate in the exam.

For the skills component, students must pass each station individually (score at least 50%) before the average is calculated for the "skills exam score". If a student fails one of the stations, their final score for the "skills exam" will be equal to the lowest score achieved. Each station may have its own passing criteria, which will be communicated via Canvas before the exam period.

The Communication exam consists of 3 parts: 1. One or more stations in the exam, 2. Reflection report, and 3. Internship report. If a student fails one or more parts of the exam, their final score for the "communication exam" will be equal to the lowest score achieved. If there are multiple communication exam stations, students must pass each station (score at least 50%). If a student fails one or both stations, their score for the "station" will be equal to the lowest score achieved. Detailed instructions for calculating scores will be available in the communication guide on Canvas.

The "final exam score" is calculated by averaging the "final skills exam score" and the "final communication exam score", provided the student passed both (score at least 50%). If a student fails one of the components, their "final exam score" will be equal to the lowest score achieved.

• Internships (20%)
At the end of the GP internship, a point out of 20 is given based on the internship and the portfolio. The assessment of the care internship from Clinical skills and internships I is not part of the examination period and is included in the final assessment of Clinical skills and internships II. At the end of the internship, a point out of 20 is given based on the completed internship and the portfolio, including the reflection report.

2. Second session

The components 'permanent evaluation' and 'internship' cannot be retaken in the resit session.

Partial scores for the stations within the skills education and communication exam can be carried over to the resit session if the result is at least 50% and with the agreement of the instructor.

A student who did not pass the entire course in the first session but still wishes to retake one or more passed exam components (except for permanent evaluation and internship) must send an email to skillslab@vub.be no later than 2 weeks after the official announcement of grades. Once the student has notified via email that they wish to forego their partial grade(s), they will irreversibly lose them.

3. Partial grades if the credit is not obtained in the second examination period

The partial scores for the internships can be transferred to the next academic year upon explicit request from the student (skillslab@vub.be) and with the agreement of the supervisor. This request must be made no later than the start of the new academic year.

If a student has passed the permanent evaluation of skills education (with a result of at least 50%) and passed all stations of the skills education exam (with a result of at least 50% for each individual station), these partial scores can be transferred to the next academic year upon explicit request from the student (skillslab@vub.be) and with the agreement of the supervisor. This request must be made no later than the start of the new academic year.

If a student has passed the permanent evaluation of communication (with a result of at least 50%) and passed the communication exam (with a result of at least 50% for each individual station), these partial scores can be transferred to the next academic year upon explicit request from the student (skillslab@vub.be) and with the agreement of the supervisor. This request must be made no later than the start of the new academic year.

This request must be made no later than the start of the new academic year.

4. Discussion of the exam
To discuss the Clinical Skills and Internships II exam, students can register for a personal appointment after the official announcement of the exam results. The student must clearly state which parts he wishes to discuss. An individual time is agreed at which the exam can be discussed with the student.
