Course Content

I. HOC:

The various (patho-) physiological processes and (medical) complications of the locomotor system in Specific Target Groups and the influence of physical fitness (performance capacity), physical activity and sport on the health of these Specific Target Groups will be discussed. The (international) Recommendations for Physical Activity, the Measurement of Physical Activity and the design of exercise programmes for each Specific Target Group will be considered. Within each Specific Target Group, fit and unfit people will be examined. In addition to the physiological processes, attention will also be paid to knowledge and insight into the psychosocial aspects of exercise in these Specific Target Groups.

The student is expected to be able to know and apply different evaluation methods for physical fitness and specific modalities of physical exercise in Specific population.

II. INTERNSHIP:

Two types of practical internship can be chosen:

- within existing structures of Specific populations to guide people during their sports and exercise activities and to measure physical activity and / or physical fitness with Specific populations;

- research internship at Specific populations.

III. SELF

The SELF consists of the development of an Internship Report, consisting of a report of the various internships and the elaboration of a ‘casus’ of 1 person who was followed closely during the internship. Scientific literature about the ‘casus’ will be sought so that a thorough, scientific picture (disease, psycho-social situation, SES, ...) of the ‘casus’ can be formed. The exercise schedule must be part of the Internship Report.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

I. HOC:

The aim of the lectures (HOC) is that the student can describe the knowledge and understanding of the different (patho-) physiological processes and (medical) complications of the locomotor system in specific target groups.

The student can collect and analyze the evidence-based (inter)national scientific literature about the Specific populations and specific cases.

The student can select, for every specific population, the best evaluation method at measure physical fitness.

The student can develop, plan, implement and adapt (taking into account the evolution of the person) and evaluate an adapted (preventive) training schedule in an evidence-based manner for every Specific population.

The student can identify the determinants (psycho-social and environmental factors) of physical activity.

II. INTERNSHIP:

The aim of the Internships is to be able to apply the knowledge and insight taught during the HOC (application) and to integrate skills and attitudes (competences) in an environment that is a daily professional practice.

The student demonstrates a scientific-critical and respectful attitude towards physical activity in the Specific populations. The student can communicate on an adequate manner with people from the Specific populations.

The student is expected to draw up and implement an adjusted (preventive) evidence-based exercise program on the basis of that knowledge and insights for the group or individual. The training schedule must be able to be communicated in an adequate manner and updated in function of the progress of the case.

III. SELF

The aim of the Self is to reflect on the Specific populations that are followed during the internship and to work out a ‘casus’.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
PRAC Internship determines 20% of the final mark.
SELF Report determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling Examen with a relative weight of 6 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

    Note: met schriftelijke voorbereiding

Within the PRAC Internship category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Stagebeoordeling with a relative weight of 2 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Verslag van de stages with a relative weight of 2 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

- The total score out of 20 is formed by the sum of the scores obtained for the exam (60%), the practical internships (20%) and the SELF (internship report and case studies) (20%) containing the reflection on the internships and the worked out case. However, if one of the three partial scores is less than 08 out of 20, then no average is made and the lowest score is used as the final score.

- If the student achieves ≥10/20 for part (exam, internship of self), but does not passes for the total score, the mark (≥10/20) will automatically be transferred to the second session.

- The examination method is identical in the first and second examination period.

- No partial points are transferred from one academic year to another.

HOC:
The exam consists of an oral test after written preparation. In this context knowledge, insight and application with regard to the subject matter as well as practical reasoning in a specific fitness setting or scientific study (s) are evaluated by the student. The student is also confronted with a description of a concrete practical situation and is expected to articulate the strategy of his actions and the scientific basis thereof.

INTERNSHIP:

The overall performance of the student within the internship is observed (by the teacher and / or the supervisor in the field) and assessed. An internship form is used for this, which contains the assessment criteria.

SELF:

The internship report and case studies are discussed with the student during the oral exam. In addition, the teacher elaborates on the various elements of the internship report.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
