Course Content

This course provides an introduction to financial accounting with the aim of giving students an insight into the preparation of financial statements. Important accounting principles, valuation methods and the double-entry accounting bookkeeping method are discussed in depth and illustrated extensively.

The course consists of two parts. In the first part, the theoretical framework is given abundant consideration, with particular attention being paid to the accounting obligations, the content and the form of the financial statements.  The process leading to the preparation of the financial statements is examined. The course focusses on basic accounting principles, rules and tools. The double-entry bookkeeping technique is thoroughly discussed. Attention is paid to the logical connection between the balance sheet and the income statement. In the second part, the most common transactions of a company are discussed and journalised with the required journal entries. These transactions include sales and purchase cycles, fixed assets, receivables, accruals, payables, equity, and provisions. Throughout this course reference is made to the Belgian legal framework, which is in line with the European directive.
