Course Content

Course Content: Predicate, subject and arguments, syntactic functions and semantic roles, transitivity, intransitivity, lexical aspect, passive voice, impersonality.

Research task: Syntactic and semantic analysis of a verb.

As the subject it taught and assessed in Spanish, advanced knowledge of that language is a requirement.

Study material will be provided over the course of the semester in the lessons or by the means of the learning platform. Additionally, students are required to take notes during the course.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

To acquire a good linguistic knowledge of Spanish.

Being able to identify and explain several classifications of verbs.

To be able to comment on the relationship between syntax and semantics.

To be able to complete a lexicographical study of a verb based on dictionaries.

To present a corpus-based analysis of syntactic structures

To write an academic paper on the syntax and semantics of a verb and to give a presentation about it.

To optimize critical and analytical skills

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 30% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • examen mondeling with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • schriftelijk Paper with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Presentatie paper with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students can only pass the course as a whole, if they achieved a minimal score of 8/20 for each of the separate evaluation criteria. If a student scored less than 8/20 for one or more of the separate evaluation criteria, he or she cannot receive a final score higher than 9/20. If a student does not participate in all of the separate evaluation criteria of the course, he or she will be marked absent for the course as a whole.

Partial grades can be transferred to a later exam session within the same academic year, at the written request of the student.
