Course Content

This course teaches the basic principles of sport sociology. It will cover the main sociological (action) theories relevant to sport and the different social functions and meanings of sport. This then serves as a general framework to situate and critically discuss the place of sport within a number of major societal developments (such as modernism, postmodernism, individualization, informalization). In doing so, attention is also paid to the relationship between sport and body and movement culture, and certain themes within this are addressed (such as ethical reflections; idealization and degradation; instrumentalization; civilization process; the ideal body type; ...). In addition, methodological aspects and pitfalls of measuring general sports participation are also addressed and the participation rates of disadvantaged groups are discussed.
