Course Content

The course consists of two modules:

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I (WPO, semester 1 + 2, 35h, Tatiana Pieters) :

The practical seminar alternates short theoretical overviews with exercises, deepening the knowledge of the French grammar taught in secondary school. For this practical seminar will be continuous evaluation. 

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I :

This second module consists of:

  1. Lectures (HOC, semester 2, 26h, Prof. dr. Marie-Eve Michot):
  • The relationship of the French language with the other Romance languages and other language groups and families.
  • The international dimension of French.
  • Language variation and language change: geographical, social and diachronic variations of French.
  • Oral and written language: phonetics, phonology and spelling.
  • A first introduction to the different components of language description: phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics and discourse analysis.
  • The students prepare a presentation about a certain French variety (team work).
  1. Practical seminar (WPO, semester 2, 6h, Tatiana Pieters)

The students learn how to use conduct phonetical transcriptions. For this practical seminar there will be a written evaluation.

Teaching method _ Grammaire normative:

1) Administration of an intake test that will determine the starting level of the students. With help of this test students know their mastery of the basic rules of normative French grammar at the beginning of the academic year. Before the lectures take place they know which preparations and effort they have to make to obtain the prescribed final competencies. If a student scores 15/20 or more, he/she will be exempted from exercises. As a compensation he/she must explain a grammatical subject form the course and supervise the exercises of this subject. The student will be given a bonus of -2, -1, 0, +1 or +2 on top of the result of the intake test for the module 'grammaire normative I' 

2) Group seminar with theory and exercises: 
theory will be taught during the seminars, after which a series of classical exercises will be made. 

3) independent preparation of the exercises
Students must prepare exercises that have not been corrected during lectures. They can correct them on the basis of an answer booklet that will be made available at Canvas.

4) continuous evaluation

Méthode d’enseignement :

1) Un test d’entrée détermine le niveau des étudiants dès le début de l’année académique. Ce test d’entrée permet à l’étudiant de connaître son niveau de maîtrise des règles grammaticales de la langue française dès le début de l’année académique. Avant même que les cours aient réellement débuté, il/ elle est par conséquent conscient des préparations ou des efforts qu’il/ elle devra entreprendre pour atteindre les objectifs du cours. Si un étudiant obtient au moins un 15/20 pour ce test d’entrée, il sera dispensé des exercices ainsi que de l’examen final du cours ‘Grammaire normative I’. En contrepartie, il exposera un sujet grammatical du syllabus et il accompagnera ses collègues de classe pour la préparation des exercices, travail pour lequel cet étudiant recevra un bonus de ‘-2, -1, 0, +1, +2’ qui sera ajouté à la note obtenue pour le test d’entrée.

2) Séminaires collectifs (théorie et exercices) :

Application correcte des règles grammaticales de base du français qui ont été enseignées dans l’enseignement secondaire. La théorie est enseignée pendant les séminaires, après quoi une série d’exercices sont préparés de manière collective.

3) Préparation individuelle d’exercices:

Les exercices qui n’ont pas été faits pendant les séminaires sont préparés à la maison, après quoi les étudiants les corrigent à l’aide de corrigés qui sont téléchargés sur Canvas.

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I:

An overview of basic concepts and theories in the field of French linguistics.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 35% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 15% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mond. exam. Ling. franç. I with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen GN I with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Present + oef. Ling franç. I with a relative weight of 15 which comprises 15% of the final mark.

A. GRAMMAIRE NORMATIVE I:

Permanent evaluation (50% of the final grade):

The progress of the student is assessed during the two semesters by intermediate tests. The participation to these intermediate tests gives the student the prospect to be exempted of the final written exam, if he/ she obtains an average result of 14/20 for theses intermediates tests. The students who do not receive this exemption will participate to the final written exam of Grammaire normative I.

 

B. LINGUISTIQUE FRANCAISE I (5% + 45% of the final grade)

- Practical seminar (WPO): Permanent evaluation (5%):

The progress of the student is assessed during the second semester by intermediate tests. The participation to these intermediate tests gives the student the prospect to be exempted of the partial written exam "Linguistique française I - exercices" if he/ she obtains an average result of 14/20 for theses intermediates tests. The students who do not receive this exemption will participate to the partial written exam.

- Lectures (HOC): oral exam (35%) + team work (10%):

      - The students prepare a group presentation about one specific variety of French. If a student does not participate in this group presentation, he/ she will prepare an individual paper for the second exam period.

      - All students participate to the oral exam.

  • The final grade is the sum of the three grades obtained for both modules (Grammaire normative, lectures, practical seminar linguistics), provided that the three grades are not lower than 08/20. If this is the case for one of the three grades, the final grade will also be lower than a 08/20, regardless of the other obtained grades.
  • Absence for one of the four compulsory evaluations results in an absence for the final grade.
  • The partial results of 14/20 or higher are transferred to the second exam period. If the student still wants to participate to one of the partial evaluations in order to replace the partial result, he needs to send an email to the Professor before the start of the second exam period.
  • Once a student has notified his / her wish to participate to the second evaluation in August/September in order to replace a partial result, he/ she irrevocably loses this partial result.
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
