Course Content

The course consists of two modules:

A. ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’ (lecture 26h sem 1+2)

This practical seminar alternates short theoretical overviews with exercises, and strengthens essential knowledge of French grammar, corresponding to the CECFR B2 language level. These grammar seminars will be evaluated through regular written tests throughout both semesters. An introduction to the phonetical transcription of French is part of this seminar.

B. ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’ (HC 2h sem 1, WPO 1h sem 2)

The second module of this course consists of

B1. lecture (semester 1, 24hrs) on:

the relatedness between the French language and other Romance languages and other language groups and families at large.
the international dimension of French.
oral and written language: phonetics, phonology and graphematics
a first introduction to the different components of language description: morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics, lexicology, text linguistics, discourse analysis, and pragmatics.

B2. practical seminar (semester 2, 13hrs):

In the seminar, students practice the use of terminology, concepts and analyses introduced in the lecture at the hand of concrete examples.

Le cours se compose de deux modules :

A.    Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française (TP 26h sem 1+2)

Ces séminaires alternent de courtes explications théoriques avec des séries d’exercices qui reprennent ou approfondissent la grammaire du français enseignée dans l’enseignement secondaire. Des évaluations intermédiaires sont prévues pour ce cours (voir les informations sur l’évaluation).
Les cours comprennent également une section sur l’introduction à la transcription phonétique du français.

B.    Introduction à la linguistique française (CM 2h sem 1, TP 1h sem 2)

Le deuxième module du cours consiste en

B1. Un cours magistral (semestre 1, 24h) :

- Le rapport du français aux autres langues romanes aux autres groupes et familles de langues.
- La dimension internationale du français
- La phonétique, la phonologie et l’orthographe, les rapports entre la langue parlée et la langue écrite.
- Une première introduction aux différentes composantes de la description de la langue : morphologie, syntaxe, lexicologie et sémantique, linguistique du texte et du discours, pragmatique.

B2. Des séminaires d’exercices (semestre 2, 13h) :

Au cours de ces séminaires pratiques, les étudiant.e.s s’exercent à l’application de la terminologie, des concepts et des outils d’analyse introduits dans le cours magistral.

Teaching method

A.‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

Group seminar with theory and exercise:

The lecturer prepares a set of theoretical explanations on the use, form and function of grammatical subject, after which students prepare a set of exercices in group.

Individual preparation of exercises:
Students will prepare the remainder of the exercises that have not been corrected during lectures. All the exercises that have not been corrected during class hours will be uploaded on the Canvas platform.

B.    ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’

Lecture with introduction to theory and examples, including group discussion.
Seminar with practical exercise for the analysis of linguistic examples (individually or in groups).

1) séminaires de groupe avec théorie et exercices :

La théorie est enseignée pendant les séminaires, suivie d’une série d’exercices en classe.

Préparation autonome et individuelle des exercices :

Les exercices qui ne sont pas traités pendant les séminaires en classe doivent être préparés par les étudiant.e.s à la maison, après quoi ils peuvent les corriger en utilisant les clés de correction publiées sur Canvas.

B.    Introduction à la linguistique française.

Cours magistral avec présentation de la théorie et d’exemples (ex cathedra) et discussion en groupe.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

A.    ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

Students are able to apply fundamental rules of French grammar and they develop a metalinguistic awareness for language structures. Students are able to transform phonetical transcriptions into orthographic ones (and vice-versa).


B.    ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’
        

  • Students are able to situate French in relation to other Romance languages, language families and language groups.
  • Students can depict the global reach of the French language.
  • Students can present an overview of the different points of view from which one can approach the study of the French language.
  • Students master a number of essential linguistic terminology and descriptive models that are required to explore the domain of French (applied) linguistics.
  • Students actively take note during lectures and presentations in order to stimulate their analytical thinking.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 40% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen Intro with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Travaux pratiques with a relative weight of 15 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written exam: 60% of the final mark
(Lecture and seminar ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’)

Category ‘other exam’: 40% of the final mark
(Seminar ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’, continuous evaluation)

If a student does not pass the continuous evaluation, they will participate in an additional part of the written exam in the first exam period in June.


• The final grade is the sum of partial grades obtained for both modules, provided that each partial grade is no lower than 08/20. If however one or more partial grades are lower than 08/20, the final grade will automatically be calculated at 08/20, regardless of the other obtained grades.
• Absence for one of the two compulsory evaluations will result in an "absence" mark for the final grade.
• The partial results are, in case a minimum result of 14/20 is obtained, transferred to the second term. Students who wish to retake a part of the exam send an email to the teacher before the start of the second term.
•  As soon as a student renounces a partial grade, he/she will irrevocably lose that grade.

L’évaluation se compose des catégories de travaux suivants :

L’examen écrit détermine 60% de la note finale

Lexamen “autre” détermine 40% de la note finale
(Exercices ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’, évaluation permanente)
Si un.e étudiant.e ne réussit pas les évaluations permanentes, il/elle participe à une partie supplémentaire de l’examen écrit lors de la première session de juin.

Conditions d'évaluations complémentaires :
La note finale du cours représente la somme de tous les résultats partiels obtenus pour les deux modules, à condition toutefois que ces résultats partiels ne soient pas inférieurs à un 08/20. Si c’est le cas pour l’un des résultats, la note finale du cours sera également inférieure à un 08/20, quel que soit le résultat obtenu pour l’autre module.
Les résultats partiels représentant un 14/20 ou plus sont transférés à la seconde session, à la condition que l’étudiant.e communique cette décision au professeur avant le début de la seconde période d’examens. Il ou elle perd alors irrévocablement le résultat partiel obtenu en première session.
