Course Content

The course consists of two modules:

A.    ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’

A1. Lecture (semester 1, 26 hours):

-        The relationship of French with other Romance languages and other language groups and language families

-        Basic concepts of language variation and varieties of French

-        Phonetics, phonology, and spelling, the relationships between spoken and written language

-        An initial introduction to various aspects of language description: morphology, syntax, lexicology and semantics, text and discourse linguistics, pragmatics

-        Structural peculiarities of French compared to other Romance and European languages


A2. Exercises (semester 1, 13h):

During this practical session, students practice the application of terminology, concepts, and analytical tools explained in the lecture through concrete examples.

B.    ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

Exercises (semester 2, 26h)

This part of the course alternates between brief theoretical explanations and sets of exercises that either review or delve deeper into the grammar of French taught in secondary education. Continuous assessment is provided for this practical session (see assessment information).

-        Les particularités structurelles du français par rapport aux autres langues romanes et européennes

A.    ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

 

A2 Travaux pratiques dirigés (semestre 1, 13h) :

 

Au cours de ces travaux dirigés, les étudiants pratiquent l’application de la terminologie, des concepts et des outils d’analyse présentés dans le cours magistral à l’aide d’exemples concrets.

 

B.    ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

 

Travaux pratiques dirigés (semestre 2, 26h)

 

Les travaux dirigés alternent entre de courts exposés théoriques et des séries d’exercices qui constituent une révision ou un approfondissement de la grammaire française enseignée au niveau secondaire. Une évaluation continue est prévue pour ce travaux pratiques dirigés (voir les informations d’évaluation).

Teaching method

A.    ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’

Lecture presenting theory and examples (ex-cathedra) and group discussion.

Practical session with exercises (individual or in groups) using concrete examples.

B.    ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

1)     Classical seminar with theory and exercises:

The theory is taught during the seminars, followed by a series of exercises done collectively in class.

Independent preparation of exercises:

Exercises that are not corrected collectively during the practical session should be prepared by students at home. They can then correct these exercises using answer keys provided on Canvas.

1)     Séminaires en groupe avec théorie et exercices :

La théorie est enseignée lors des séminaires, suivie par une série d’exercices en classe.

 

Préparation individuelle des exercices :

 

Les exercices qui ne sont pas corrigés en classe pendant les travaux pratiques dirigés doivent être préparés par les étudiants chez eux, puis corrigés à l’aide de clés de correction disponibles sur Canvas.

A.    ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’

-        Students can position French in relation to other Romance languages, language families, and language groups. They are familiar with concrete examples of structural peculiarities of the French language compared to other Romance and European languages.

-        Students can identify the main dimensions of language variation in French.

-        Students have an overview of the various perspectives from which the study of the French language can be approached.

-        Students have a grasp of the essence of several basic concepts and descriptive models necessary for exploring the domain of French linguistics. 

TThe students take notes during classes as a way to stimulate their ability to think analytically

Students develop metalinguistic awareness of language structures through the application of basic rules of French grammar.

-        Les étudiant·e·s peuvent situer le français par rapport aux autres langues romanes, familles de langues et groupes linguistiques. Iels connaissent des exemples concrets des particularités structurelles de la langue française par rapport aux autres langues romanes et européennes.

-        Les étudiant·e·s peuvent identifier les principales dimensions de la variation linguistique en français.

-        Les étudiant·e·s ont un aperçu des différentes perspectives à partir desquelles on peut aborder l’étude de la langue française.

-        Les étudiant·e·s maîtrisent l’essence de certains concepts de base et modèles descriptifs nécessaires pour explorer le domaine de la linguistique française.

Les étudiant.e.s prennent des notes pendant les cours ce qui stimule leur pensée analytique.

B. ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’

Les étudiants développent une conscience métalinguistique des structures linguistiques en appliquant les règles de base de la grammaire française.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 40% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen Intro with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 60% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Travaux pratiques with a relative weight of 15 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Evaluation

The evaluation consists of the following assignment categories:

Written Exam determines 60% of the final grade

(Lecture and exercises ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’)

The written exam takes place after semester 1 in January.

Other Exam determines 40% of the final grade

(Exercises on 'Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française', continuous assessment in semester 2)

If a student fails the continuous assessments, they will participate in a written exam during the resit period.

Additional information:

-        The overall final grade is the sum of the two partial grades obtained for both modules, provided that neither of the two partial grades is below 08/20. If one of the two grades is below 08/20, the final grade will automatically be below 08/20, regardless of the other results obtained.

-        Absence from one of the two compulsory evaluation components results in an absence as the result code.

The partial results, with a score of at least 14/20, will be carried over to the resit period.

L’évaluation se compose des catégories de tâches suivantes :

 

L’examen écrit détermine 60% de la note finale

(Cours magistraux et TPD ‘Introduction à la linguistique française’)

L’examen écrit a lieu après le semestre 1 en janvier.

 

L’examen « autre » détermine 40% de la note finale

(TD ‘Concepts fondamentaux de la grammaire française’, évaluation continue au semestre 2)

Si un étudiant échoue aux évaluations continues, il/elle participe à un examen écrit lors de la session de rattrapage.

 

-        La note finale globale est la somme des deux notes partielles obtenues pour les deux modules, à condition cependant qu’aucune des deux notes partielles ne soit inférieure à 08/20. Si tel est le cas pour l’une des deux notes, la note finale sera automatiquement inférieure à 08/20, quelles que soient les autres notes obtenues.

-        L’absence à l’une des deux parties obligatoires de l’évaluation entraîne une absence en tant que code de résultat.

-        Les résultats partiels, avec une note d’au moins 14/20, sont reportés à la session de rattrapage.
