Course Content

The module Pratique du français 2 has three main objectives :

First, it aims to allow students to develop a high level of proficiency in the French language : consolidation of the grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and pronunciation. These competencies are through applied exercises.
The module aims to bring students at a high level in communicational skills : reading comprehension, listening comprehension, oral skills and written skills (CEFR level C1). These skills are trained using a task-oriented approach, through the use of various field-related documents. The focus is on the development of academic French and on writing and speaking tasks that TALK and TTKA students will be asked to produce in the course of their studies (critical essays, oral presentations, summaries, etc.). Students are also encouraged to develop a critical attitude regarding their own proficiency and to take appropriate steps to improve their language skills.
The module also focuses on the development of other academic and citizenship skills, namely intercultural and interdisciplinary thinking, critical skills, and debating skills. Topics discussed include (depending on the year) French language-related questions, as well as social, cultural or literary issues linked to Francophones cultures.

During the first class, the specific modalities of the module will be communicated to the students via a vade mecum. This vade mecum is a binding document.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

At the end of the module, students are able to:

Speak, write, and understand French to a high level of competency, such as defined by the CEFR;
Articulate well-constructed arguments and participate in discussions and debates over course material, while adopting adequate registry, style, and vocabulary;
Summarise information and arguments coming from different sources and reformulate them in a coherent whole;
Form their own opinion on complex field-related topics;
Show a critical attitude regarding their skills and learning process, and take responsibility for their own learning and development.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

schrijftaken with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

This course consists of three assessment components:

Writing : 50%
Speaking: 25%
Grammar and vocabulary : 25%

Assessment methods :

Continuous assessment: 50% of the final mark
Periodic evaluation : end-of-year oral examination (25% of the final mark) and written examination : 25% of the final mark).

Participation in every test or task of the continuous assessment is required to have access to the end-of-year examination.

Students need to score at least 50% for each assessment component to pass the course, that is 50% for writing, 50% for speaking and 50% for grammar and vocabulary.

The maximum final score for the course as a whole which can be awarded to students who have participated in all assessment components but did not achieve at least 50% for each of the components mentioned above is the score for the component for which they received the lowest score.

Students who do not obtain a pass grade for one or more separate assessment components in the first exam session can choose to carry over their scores to the second exam session rather than retaking the assessment for said components during the second exam session.

The score for a separate assessment component cannot be carried over to a subsequent academic year.
