- Flow visualisation techniques with sand, oil, tufts, bubbles, ink, smoke, refractive index variation (Schlieren- and shadowgraphy)
- Pressure anemometers and response time for line-cavity systems
- Hot wire anemometers for velocity and concentration measurement
- Laser-Doppler techniques for measuring velocity and size of particles
- Particle Image & Tracking Velocimetry
- Infrared Thermography
- Spectroscopy for temperature and concentration measurement
- Interferometry, diffraction, imaging techniques for diagnostics of particles, droplets and bubbles.
Laboratory exercises (24 hrs) will be performed in groups, and concern velocity measurements in a turbulent flow using intrusive and non-intrusive techniques.

The characterisation of fluid flows is a prerequisite for the design of an aircraft, a bridge, a wind turbine or for the understanding of pollutant dispersion in urban environments. Also the design and optimisation of numerous industrial processes require a good description of their fluid flows. This knowledge can be obtained via numerical computations provided that the corresponding physical modelling has been validated against experimental results. Herein lies the domain of Experimental Fluid Mechanics.
The course classifies a wide variety of fluid flows and treats a methodology to characterize them experimentally. A review will be given of contact devices and optical techniques for measuring global and local quantities. Corresponding data acquisition and processing will be explained. Advanced post-processing algorithms for turbulent flows will be given related to aerodynamics and industrial applications.
