Inhoud

The goal of the course is that the student gets a broad overview of advanced wired and wireless communication systems. The selected subjects in telecom depend on the industrial expectations and realizations.

To make the course accessible to students with various background, from novices to specialists, the course starts with a recap of important telecommunications aspects required to understand state-of-the-art literature. This includes a recap/overview of

  • properties of various modulation techniques such as single carrier modulation (from BPSK to QAM) and multicarrier modulation (OFDM and the more advanced modulation schemes using in e.g. 5G);
  • properties of various wireless indoor and outdoor channels;
  • properties of channel coding techniques;
  • indicating which technology is used in which standard such as xDSL, DAB, Wi-Fi, and 2G to 5G communication (GSM / GPRS, UMTS, WiMAX, …)

After the introductory lectures, the students need to select a recent tutorial/overview paper that deals with state-of-the-art communication such as the 5G wireless communication that is currently under deployment. The type of tutorial/overview paper can be a technical paper, which described for example advanced modulation schemes, but can also cover more practical related topics, such as how to deploy the network in practice and where the put the base stations, or more societal questions such as impact on health and regulation.

Algemene competenties

The students are brought in contact with the latest evolutions in the technology of telecommunication by the exchange between in the field specialists and the students. The 'Capita Selecta' are reviewed and organised each year in close cooperation with the industry (FITCE). After completion of this course, the students have acquired knowledge on industrial research projects and on the processes to market and deploy new products and services.

This course contributes to the general competences of the academic degree of Master in Engineering in Electronics and Information Technology.

The main goals are:
- To give insight to the students in the evolution of telecommunications in order to gain reasonable expectations for the future;
- To gain engineering skills in telecom technology and also in related disciplines, e.g. in studying business models for Telcos.

The expected end competences are:
- Knowledge and insight:
To know and understand the organization and realizations of communication channels.
To understand the evolution of telecom technology and to be able to evaluate them.
- Judgement abilities:
Be able to make SWOT analyses for the treated subjects and to motivate the choices.
- Communication skills:
Ability to express orally and written on the treated subjects and a presentation on a subject chosen by the student must be held.
- Learning skills:
From the gained expertise in the course, be able to independently study new developments, to evaluate and use them.

Beoordelingsinformatie

    Toelichting: Oral examination. Open book style.

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

The student needs to study the content of the selected tutorial/overview paper thoroughly. He/she needs to show that he has an in depth understanding of the paper’s content during a public oral defense in front of the other students. In this way, the students will learn from each other. The student’s evaluations will be done considering the quality of the presentation (how accessible is the presentation for the other students), the technical complexity (how much technical information did the student learned by studying the paper), and how did the student perform during the question and answering.
