Course Content

This course studies the global geomorphologic structures of the Earth. Building upon the basics geomorphologic concepts presented in the courses Physical Geography and Geology of the 1st BA, the training in geomorphology is taken forward. As the exogenous geomorphologic processes were discussed in the 1st BA, this course focuses on endogenous processes and their interaction with the exogenous processes to model the large scale geomorphologic structure of the Earth.

1. Global geomorphology: definition and scales
2. Plate tectonics and geomorphology: forms of relief at plate margins
i. Geomorphology of converging plate margins
ii. Geomorphology of conserving plate margins
iii. Geomorphology of diverging plate margins
3. Geomorphology in the centre of plates
4. Structural geomorphology: drainange network and volcanoes
5. Long term development of the relief

WPO
• Analysis of airphotos: scale, stereoscopic properties, height of features
• Geomorphological interpretation of airphotos
=> Written report with the results of the mapping and geomorhological interpretation of a airphoto
• Elaboration of a case study of global geomorphology (related to the course) based on satellite images and limited literature
=> Power Point presentation presented in the last weeks of the semester

Course material
Digital course material (Required) : Globale geomorfologie, Power Point presentaties, cursustekst en opgave van de practica, Leerplatform
Handbook (Recommended) : Global Geomorphology, M.A. Summerfield, Routledge Taylor & Francis group, 9780582301566, 1991
Additional info

Power Point presentations, text of the course and description of the practicals are available on the learning platform.

Complementary study material:

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

-The student has a thorough understanding of plate tectonics and its role on the formation of large scale relief forms on Earth
-The student understands the different spatial and temporal scales at which exogenous and endogenous geomorphologic processes act.
-The student is able to explain the large scale relief forms of Earth based on the concept of plate tectonics.
-The student is able to describe and map the geomorphologic properties of a landscape using airphotos and satellite images.
-The student is able to identify and explain the influence of endogenous geomorphologic processes and geological structures on a physical landscape.
-The student is able to rationalize the formation and long term evolution of a landscape in the framework of the interactions between endogenous and exogenous geomorphologic processes.
-The student takes a additional step in the development of the needed skills and attitude to acquire and broaden his knowledge independently through the use of scientific sources.
-The student manages the techniques to synthesize the acquired knowledge in a clear manner, and to present these both orally and in written form. This contributes to the acquisition of critical spirit, and the ability for abstraction and synthesis.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
LEC Presentation determines 30% of the final mark.
PRAC Report determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondeling examen with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: Mondeling examen. Een cijfer >8/20 voor het examen is nodig om te slagen voor het vak

Within the LEC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Presentatie case study with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Note: Presentatie en schriftelijke verslag van case study

Within the PRAC Report category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Verslag van luchtfoto with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: Verslag van luchtfoto interpretatie

Additional info regarding evaluation

50%  Oral exam. A mark >8/20 for the exam is needed to pass the course.
20% Written report(s) of the airphoto interpretation (20%)
30% Oral presentation of the case study

Partial marks for the oral exam, the practical tasks or the presentation, if the student obtains at least half of the score for this part, are transferred to the second session and to the next academic year.

The student can relinquish his partial mark, provided s/he reports this to the lecturer and assistant by e-mail not later than 15 August (2nd session) or 1 October (no transfer to the next academic year).

Once the student has indicated that he will abandon his partial mark, he will irrevocably lose the partial mark.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
