- Inhoud
- Theoretical:
- Overview of different types of hydraulic river models and fields of application;
- Application of a full hydrodynamic model for open channels and rivers (water surface profile computations under unsteady flow conditions, flood wave propagation, 1D vs. 2D);
- Implementation of hydraulic structures (weirs, spillways, control and regulating structures, sluices, bridges, dikes, culverts, etc.);
- Implementation of floodplains (quasi 2D, theory of 2D, use of DEM), river flood modelling and mapping;
- Simplified modelling: steady state, kinematic and diffusive wave, reservoir routing, etc.;
- Solution schemes: theory of explicit versus implicit schemes, finite differences;
- Simulation strategies and model validation: long-term simulations vs. historical or synthetic events, boundary conditions, validation based on river flow and water level data and historical flood maps;
- Introduction to physico-chemical water quality modelling.
Practical:
Hands-on training on PC will be given based on river modelling software (MIKE11, InfoWorks-RS or HEC-RAS) and an example dataset for a selected river. This will involve sessions on:
- Implementation of full hydrodynamic model
- Floodplain modelling
- Flood simulation (hitorical and synthetic events) and creation of flood hazard maps (for given return periods)
- Scenario runs: e.g. analysis of the influence of hydraulic structures or flood control reservoirs.

Algemene competenties
The goal of the course is to teach river modelling concepts and software, and to give students valuable insight in the hydrodynamic processes along river systems, in hydraulic engineering problems and problem solving, in the design and operation of hydraulic structures, in flood wave propagation, river flooding and physico-chemical water quality modelling. During the course, state-of-the-art examples of modelling systems, software and hydraulic engineering cases will be considered. Hands-on training is given based on the MIKE11, InfoWorks-RS and/or HEC-RAS river modelling software. During this training, modelling skills will be built up, which include problem solving, insight in the limitations of river models, the range of useful applications, etc. At the same time, physical knowledge on river hydraulics and insight in hydraulic engineering problems will be gained.
