Course Content

This course focuses on contemporary youth crime and justice issues, related to youth crime phenomena, comprehensive frameworks and new theories, as well as on social reaction on youth crime. The themes that will be dicussed and analysed change on a yearly basis and can include the following topics:

  • Gender and youth crime and justice
  • Judicial pathways, impact and emerging adulthood.
  • Detention of youngsters
  • Discretion in youth justice decisional practices
  • Police and youngsters
  • Youth victimology (abuse, institutional violence)
  • International comparative perspective on youth justice systems and practices
  • Radicalisation 
  • Children's rights

These issues are approached on 4 levels (theoretical, methodolical, international-comparative and historical).

The course consists of compulsory lectures and practical seminars. An overview of the content of these lectures and seminars will be provided in the beginning of the semester. Students will have to make assignments linked to the lectures and seminars for 60 points (out of 100).

The attendance of the lectures and seminars is obligatory for day students.

For working students, three evening sessions are foreseen.

Content: Different issues are approached on 4 important levels: theoretical, methodological, international-comparative and historical. The issues are revised every academic year. In recent years the following issues have been analysed:

  • Gender and youth crime;
  • Imprisonment of youngsters;
  • Youth victimology;
  • Youth criminological practices;
  • …

General competencies

Knowledge and insight

  • Students acquire a qualitative and critical insight in the central concepts and perspectives in the domain of youth criminology. They understand and can explain and illustrate these concepts and perspectives by mobilizing practical examples  and or specific scientific or social issues.
  • Students can describe and explaincontemporary developments in youth criminological domain in a comprehensive way.

Skills

  • Students can deconstruct and analyse youth criminological issues. Based on this analysis they are able to develop and build a scientific reflection referring to the state of the art.
  • Students are capable of present an oral report of their analysis of a youth criminological topic.
  • Students are capable of going into debate on a youth criminological issue that they have analyzed, based on scientific insights and state of the art, and for which they developed a scientific reflection.

Attitudes

  • Students develop an awareness about the social and scientific complexity of youth criminological issues. As a consequence they acquire also an attitude of an open mindedness in developing a scientific  and social approach of these issues.
  • Students have a “inquiring” attitude towards youth criminological issues. This attitude supposes a social and criminological curiosity and scientific honesty.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 35% of the final mark.
LEC Paper determines 35% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written Exam with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the LEC Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Individual Paper with a relative weight of 35 which comprises 35% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students will have to write an individual paper (40%) and will have to make several assignments (individual and/or in group) (60%).

Lectures and seminars are compulsory. Students that are illegaly absent and/or do not deliver their assignments on time, will be referred to the second exam session. They will have to deliver their assignments and paper by August 16th (or the next working day when this is a Saturday or Sunday).

Students that obtained a credit for the assignments, can keep the grade for the second exam session. Students that obtained a credit for the individual paper, can keep the grade for the second exam session. Partial transmission of credits (for assignments or the individual paper) to the next academic year is not allowed.

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
