Inhoud

The general theme of this course is the advanced study of issues in analytical philosophy. A broad range of specific discussion topics is proposed, from which a careful selection shall be made in agreement with the students. These include subjects from the philosophy of science and philosophical logic such as: the nature of space and time, Gödel's incompleteness results, computability theory, non-classical logic, semantic paradoxes, mathematical epistemology, etc.

Algemene competenties

The student is well acquainted with and capable of discussing / explaining some advanced topcis in analytical philosophy. The student is moreover able to properly argue for and present a personal view on said topics, both in writing and orally.

Beoordelingsinformatie

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 50% van het eindcijfer

Andere bepaalt 50% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Mondeling examen met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 50% van het totale eindcijfer.

    Toelichting: Het examen is open boek en vertrekt vanuit een door de student voorbereid essay (zie essay-vragen en planning in syllabus); de beoordeling is gebaseerd op het essay zelf en op de wijze waarop de student haar/zijn standpunt uit het essay verdedigt.

Binnen de categorie Andere dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

  • Medewerking met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 50% van het totale eindcijfer.

    Toelichting: Er wordt van de student verwacht dat zij/hij voorbereid naar elke les komt (voorbereiding lectuur zoals bepaald in de syllabus).

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

Assessment will be based both on an examination and participation during classes. Regular attendance at the course seminars will thus be expected, as well as a proper preparation of discussion topics. The final exam is an "open book" one, having as its point of departure an informal essay
prepared by each student in the course of the semester, and feedback received on that by the lecturers.
